We had the good fortune of connecting with InnerTruthProject and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been working with survivors of sexual trauma for almost two decades. It was always my dream to help another survivor who felt hidden and full of shame recognize their value. Starting The Inner Truth Project was an extension of that vision and it has grown for 9.5 years because survivors of sexual trauma are everywhere and deserve to be seen and heard. As soon as we opened the doors, the center took off with a life of its own. I have had to learn about nonprofit management and business along the way – and navigate the many naysayers and small picture thinkers who believe things can only be done how they have always been done. However, being a survivor of sexual trauma has proven to be a great foundation for leadership. I always know no matter what is ahead, I have been through worse. I always know to listen to my body because my mind will mess with me every time. I always know to trust my tribe because I cannot do this work alone. And finally, just like in recovery, in business I know I am only human and I will screw up. And it is okay.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I recently went for a “date” to the Sunday House in Delray with my hubby and was reminded of just how much I love that place. It is like an oasis. I also love to spend weekends at the Brazilian Court – it feels like you are miles away from everything but it’s just a short drive from where I live. There are also so many gardens – (Heathcote Botanical in Fort Pierce is my fav.) and A Kitchen of Her Own in Sebastian is the world’s best quiche…hands down!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been asked many times about the inspiring people in my life. Hands down, the winner is always going to be my husband, Adam. He is 100 % my rock and the kick in the butt that keeps me going. There is one woman however who is my ultimate hero and role model – Mona Reis. She is the founder and director of a long-standing women’s health center. Without even meaning to, Mona has provided me a million lessons and examples of loyalty, honesty, integrity, and grace. She is the classiest and bravest of trailblazers I know.
