We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Tate and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I believe success is about much more than financial growth. While financial sustainability is important, I define success by the lasting impact we have on others and the integrity with which we pursue our goals. As the founder of a nonprofit dog rescue, I volunteer countless hours each day—not for recognition or credit, but because I am deeply committed to saving lives and building a better community.
To me, success is about consistently giving your best in everything you manage while maintaining happiness and a sense of purpose. It is about embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and continuing to grow. We all face setbacks, and while it can be easy to walk away when things do not go as planned, true success comes from perseverance, adaptability, and the willingness to keep moving forward.
Success is not only measured financially, but also by how we grow as individuals, strengthen our communities, and contribute to something greater than ourselves. My family plays a significant role in how I define success. Prioritizing health, happiness, and quality time reminds me to approach every dog in our care with the same compassion and responsibility I would want for my own loved ones.
Above all, I believe success requires accountability, transparency, honesty, and remaining true to your values. Success is found in doing the right thing, giving your best effort, and striving every day to leave people, animals, and the world around you better than you found them.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets our work apart is that we believe every dog deserves an individual chance and that a diagnosis, age, breed, or length of time spent overlooked should never determine whether a life is worth saving. At SGT Canines, we focus on some of the most vulnerable animals—dogs facing euthanasia, severe medical conditions, long-term shelter stays, and cases that others may consider too difficult or too expensive. We are committed to looking beyond the labels , the costs of life- saving care, and seeing the life and potential behind each dog.
I am most proud of the impact we have been able to make in such a short period of time. Since founding SGT Canines, we have been fortunate to save hundreds of dogs, but what I am most proud of are not the numbers themselves—it is the stories behind them. It is watching dogs who were out of time receive a second chance, seeing families experience the joy of adopting, and witnessing the incredible resilience that animals have despite the hardships they have endured.
Professionally, my journey was anything but easy. I did not come from a rescue background, nor did I have a blueprint for how to build a nonprofit organization. What I did have was a passion for helping animals and a willingness to learn. There have been countless challenges along the way—emotional losses, financial struggles, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. There have been times when giving up would have been easier, but I have learned that perseverance, humility, and adaptability are essential when building something meaningful.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that you do not have to have all the answers to make a difference. You simply have to be willing to show up, listen, continue learning, and keep moving forward. I have also learned the importance of transparency, accountability, and surrounding yourself with people who share your values and are not afraid to challenge you to become better.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Truthfully, I’m probably not the person you’d ask for a jam-packed nightlife itinerary because I’m very much a homebody.
Something I think is incredibly fun, meaningful, and different—and maybe not the answer most people would expect— But I suppose this response comes with being someone who pours so much of their heart into rescue and the dogs we care for — is visiting your local animal shelter. I know many people think shelters are too sad, but I see them as places full of hope and opportunity. Both Miami-Dade Animal Services and Broward County Animal Care offer programs where you can take a dog out for the day or even enjoy a short weekend sleepover. It’s an amazing way to spend time, meet incredible dogs, and make a real difference, even if only for a few hours.
One of my favorite places to spend time with family, friends, and dogs is Fort Lauderdale. The beach, and the beautiful marina village area, create such a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s one of those places where you can spend the day relaxing, walking around, enjoying good food, and just appreciating the scenery. If you’re looking for a fun evening, the Shorely is always a great spot for drinks and a unique experience.
Although I was born and raised in South Florida, I tend to avoid the traffic and don’t venture to South Beach nearly as much as people would expect. Instead, I appreciate what makes Miami so special—being outdoors, enjoying the water, exploring nature, and embracing the lifestyle that visitors from all over the world come here to experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without question, the people who deserve the biggest shoutout in my story are my grandfather, Stanley Graham Tate, and my father, James Tate. Their love, guidance, and unwavering commitment to helping others have shaped not only who I am, but the mission behind everything we do.
My grandfather, founder of Florida Prepaid Program , taught us that giving back to our community is what helps the world go round and that the true measure of a person is the impact they leave on others. His legacy continues to live on today, and in fact, we named our nonprofit dog rescue, SGT Canines, in his honor.
My father followed in his father’s footsteps, dedicating his life to serving others and ensuring that he, too, leaves a lasting legacy. Through his actions, he taught us the importance of compassion, integrity, accountability, and always showing up for those who need us most. He demonstrated that success is not measured by what we accumulate, but by what we give back and the lives we touch along the way.
My sisters and I would not be where we are today without these two incredible men raising us and instilling the values that we continue to carry and pass down through our work, our families, and our community. Their examples taught us that kindness matters, service matters, and that every life—human or animal—is deserving of compassion and a chance to be loved.
I am also deeply grateful for my family, my husband, our supporters, volunteers, veterinarians, fosters, and everyone who has believed in our mission. No one builds something meaningful alone, and I believe every life we have been fortunate enough to save is a reflection of the love, values, and lessons passed down to us by those who came before us.
