We had the good fortune of connecting with Franklin Da Costa Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Franklin, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
This is a personal opinion of mine, and I think it is that genuine hospitality is a trait you are born with. Working in this field for several years now I often come across other hoteliers or folks in the industry and you can tell who is passionate about the it and wanted to be in it since they were young versus someone who happened to “fall into it”. I think this is something to do with the way our brain operates, or even skills we are more fond of and hold close to us like kind gestures, serving others, attention to detail, etc. As a traveler, there is nothing better than staying or dining somewhere where there are true hospitality folks there to genuinely service you throughout your experience and going above and beyond to make sure that you feel special and taken care of.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to believe what sets me apart from others has been my personality. I am an introverted extrovert, which means that when I am at work or surrounded by others I like to socialize and fill up my social battery. I grew up an only child who wished he had siblings, which means I am an individual who is really good at “alone time” but values the time when I am with others. I like to be counted on, and be someone trustworthy that can help others in anything they may need. Being where I am today has not been easy, but it is thanks to my family, friends and coworkers that have always helped me be grounded and focused on my goals. I like to surround myself with professional, determined and goal-focused individuals who do not settle and work hard (but also know how to enjoy themselves throughout the process). Even when I felt tired or felt stuck in a certain position, those around me have helped push me to keep going and realize this is only the beginning, which keeps me excited for my future and for all things happening in the hospitality industry.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For the beginning of the trip, I would start off local and show them iconic places in Miami such as Little Havana, Coral Gables/the Grove and South Beach. For drinks I would take them somewhere around Wynwood and do some bar hopping and for meals I would go to my favorite places such as Cote or La Mar. Midway through the trip I would venture out a bit further to perhaps FLL or the Keys and take them to either Las Olas or somewhere in the upper keys. Towards the end, I would branch out a bit further and take them to iconic Palm Beach. I used to work at The Breakers which to day is my favorite property and would have drinks at the Seafood Bar or HMF and then have their iconic and delicious Sunday Brunch to end the week. The beauty of South Florida is that there is so much to do both local as well as a short drive away!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost I would like to thank my family for their ongoing support throughout my career. Working in this industry sometimes has required me to miss family events, and work holidays, evenings, and weekends, but despite it all they have always pushed me to keep going and have celebrated all my victories along the way. Second, I would like to thank my colleagues, now and in the past. Hospitality folk are all so special and care about those meaningful relationships. I like to think of my coworkers as my extended family, especially since I see some of them more than my own family. Building these professional relationships have been so important to me and I value them all deeply, as I have learned so much valuable information from them all and have met some pretty amazing people throughout the way.
