We had the good fortune of connecting with Capt. Alex Tejeda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Capt. Alex, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As an adolecent i grow up watch ESPN outdoor tunning into the like of Jose Wejebe and Flip Plate. I grew up loving nature and anything outdoors. Fishing came natural to and i alway applied science and an analytical approached. After years of being apart of the industry of kayak fishing i was able to sharing my experience and thoughts through outlets such of social media and more conventional ways like magazines. Naturally the calls and email began. With time they multiplied and with inquires of guided fishing trip via kayak. I always had a little voice that told me that fishing and guiding was something i needed to pursue. So in 2015 i decided to start my kayak fishing guiding career, It was now a passion turned career and it gave me the outlet to be on the water so i can give others the opportunity to learn and make life time memory’s.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Living in south Florida and minutes away from The Florida Keys and Everglades is the gateway to the fishing capital of world. With the abundance of life and the surrounded by water fishing seems to be apart of everyday life. However, There is a unique way to really push one self and stand out. Giving clients the ability to sit on one the best kayaks the market has to offer and target big game fish from a small boat stand out in conversation. My business gives clients the chance to economically get on the water and pursue the high end game fish south Florida offers. The boats are motored by torqeedos which or made specially for kayaks and are built and geared toward shallow water fishing. Clients to have to face all the challenges of a big vessel and it allows clients to immures them self in remote location a regular boat can not venture into. Building the business idea was easy but growing it organically has been the big hurdle. Learning the operation. SEO, web building was something new to me but was eager to learn it all. I consumed hours of reading and video to build the brand. Juggling hours on the water scouting for clients, working email and selling my self correctly, asking the right questions, having the right equipment for the clients, these were all obstacles that never end.
I want clients to remember the brand and what i offer for life. I them to tell the story of fighting a big tarpon off a kayak and successfully landing it. I want the legacy of Bone Collector kayakfishing to be heard as an adventure of the life time. the got to see wildlife and learn about the ecology. But most of all that they walked away with like knowledge of a fishery that gave them confidence to grow they passion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would begin in the wee hours of the morning in Miami’s 24hr Mary’s Coin laundry for some breakfast. Then a drive down to homestead to Don’s bait and tackle and a quick chat with the always animated shop owner. Then the iconic drive into the keys to Big Pine where we launch the kayak and head to the edge of the gulf what we call the backcountry . There in some of the most beautiful water we would spend the day looking for tarpon, bonefish, and permit. Making our way to all the island and getting off at the contents for lunch. We would arrive back as the last little bit of light evaporates into the horizon we left. From there we would go to Mangrove Mama’s for a lobster ruben live music and a nice ice cold beer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The life long dream would have never came to life is it wasn’t for my grandfather for instilling the seed to go after your dream, work hard and fish harder. To my wife that never gave up on me and believed in me and my goal. To the sacrifices we made and never giving up and allowing me to give up when times get tough. The Jackson kayak for putting the right kayaks that allow me to push the limits and keep my clients on the water. last but not least to torqeedo, they have broaden my horizons and allowed me to go places paddling would not allow me to.
