We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Dela Torre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacob, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
After being a haircolorist for seven years, I’ve learned to never take it personal if a client doesn’t like their hair.

While I strive to do my best with every client, sometimes you have a bad day, and need to adjust a color. These things are all fixable.

It’s the way in which you handle the situation that matters. Creating a safe space for clients to voice their dislikes freely and addressing the concern as expediently as possible is key.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a haircolorist, I’ve grown tremendously within the last couple years I’d say. I’ve invested in furthering my education of haircolor via online and in person workshops, and can’t wait to learn and grow that much more in the future.

My desire to do quality over quantity work and always striving to deliver my best is what I think helps sets me apart from others. There’s a saying that ‘hair is the crown you never take off’; so it better look great!

Relocating to Miami during the Pandemic was an exciting yet daunting time. Having to build a clientele in a new city isn’t easy. at all. Putting in time and effort into my social media presence has for sure helped.

Instagram is now your digitial portfolio. Check mine out; I’m @jacobdoescolor on instagram.

Being a talented haircolorist isn’t enough today; you have to push yourself to take photos and videos and self promote yourself.

One of the lessons I’ve learned in this process is to take TONS of pictures and videos. In the bunch there will probably be a handful of good quality stuff you can use.

I decided to become a haircolorist as a career switch; so it’s never too late to pursue something else if your heart isn’t in what you do. What will determine one’s success is their commitment to becoming better every single day. Taking mistakes or redos and learning from them. Doing consistently great work and being true to yourself is what I think is helping me build my brand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A few of my favorite breakfast spots in Miami are: -the Bistro Cafe for their decadent portions. The food and drinks are a visual overload

-Zak the Baker for their fresh bread and pastries and their lavender latte

-Palace Drag Brunch for bottomless mimosas and a cast of amazingly talented drag queens. They’re show stoppers! Come here to get super hyped on the weekends.

Art Scene:
Wynwood Walls – to see the diverse and beautiful pieces done by artists from all over

Perez Art Museum – their exhibits are so interactive and fun. Definitely a must see.

Viscaya Gardens is a historic landmark and is absolutely breathtaking

Drinks:

Astra Rooftop in Wynwood is totally a vibe

Strawberry Moon in SoBe especially during the weekend. Pool side with various djs/live music

Sexy Fish Miami- the decor itself is worth the trip to see. And if you stay late enough, the restaurant turns into basically a club

Beach Day = Sunday Funday
12th St for the lgbtq friendly beach. Enjoy some good people watching and even purchase some frozen adult beverages from vendors.

Restaurants
Doya- The food and drinks are phenomenal.
Tigre- for a more upscale dining experience that has a modern yet retro feel
Boho House- enjoy some drinks and some apps and wait till it gets late; it’s a total vibe
Versace mansion

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank all the creatives I have met and worked with since day one, especially celebrity NYC colorist Marie Robinson, where I did my apprenticeship and obtained such a solid foundation and love for everything haircolor.

I also want to thank House of Mane owners, Erica Quince and Sarah Caicedo, where I currently work, for challenging me and inspiring me in the best way possible. They’ve created a space filled with unbelievable talent, and I’’m more than appreciative to be part of it.

And last but definitely not least, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the constant love and support from my family. I owe everything to them, and my extreme gratitude can never be put into words.. Thank you!
