We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is that skill plus opportunity equals success. This is so far from the truth, but for years people repeat it as if it’s the only thing that needs to happen for you to be successful. The real truth is that success is more complex than that. Skill and opportunity are only half of the equation. Circumstance and luck play a bigger part in success than most people care to admit. You can have all the skills in the world and get opportunity after opportunity, but if the circumstances of that opportunity aren’t in your favor or at least neutral, you probably won’t be lucky enough to enjoy success at that moment. I’ve learned in life that skill and opportunity only benefit you when you can control the circumstances of the situation. If you keep failing at something, learn to look at the bigger picture. What is the factor outside of your skills and opportunity that you can manipulate to your advantage? Nobody gave me this advice. I had to fail enough to finally figure it out myself. To be successful, you have to acknowledge skills, opportunity, circumstances, and luck. Don’t waste your time only focusing on honing a skill or creating an opportunity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My nickname is Shutterworth the Goat Artist. I practice in the visual arts and have been drawing since I was 4 years old. I’ve done my part in literary arts and published a novel “Where Do We Go from Here” back in 2006. I created an online comic series called The Soul Wars back in 2015, I’ve been training and teaching boxing and martial arts since 2003. I also rap and have my music published on multiple streaming platforms such as Spotify, Amazon, Youtube, Tencent, and more. Last but not least, I’ve even made a few animated series out of the artwork that I created.
There’s plenty of artists that might be better than me when you break down my projects individually, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another artist with my track record for producing art content in different art forms (visual, literary, music, animation, martial arts)
Although I’m more focused on boxing and Ring Gang Radio at this stage in my life, drawing will always be my first love. Boxing has allowed me to use all of my artistic talents for one cause. I draw boxers and that has been instrumental in achieving interviews. I’ve made songs about boxing. I teach boxing to random strangers at the park just for the love of the sport. It’s hard to be proud of just one aspect, when I do it all.
I’m really excited about boxing this year because the sport is having one of its best years in recent times and women’s boxing is bigger and more in demand now. That inspires me to go hard and make my platform even bigger so I can elevate the sport even higher.
Creating Ring Gang Radio as a major boxing platform wasn’t easy. We started in the summer of 2018 with only 3 members, but kept growing because others liked what we were doing and wanted to be a part of it. We came along way. As of now, you could probably say we’re the Wu Tang clan of boxing media. Nobody else has the diverse personalities and insight that we have on the sport. Some of us have met in person while some of us haven’t yet, but that didn’t’ stop us from becoming family.
One of the biggest lessons that I’ve learned during this journey was consistency. We kept doing what we were doing week after week until more people started noticing. Live chats went from zero participants to a handful. Then that handful eventually grew and grew into the fans and subscribers we have now. You have to give the same level of greatness to 1 person just as if it was a crowded room. Somebody is always watching or listening. The moment you want to take a break from being consistent is usually the same moment someone decides to finally notice you. The universe works weird like that sometimes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I’m in South Florida, we’d have to train at a few of these wonderful parks down here. Then train at one of these beautiful beaches we have. Now that the work is out of the way, its time for fun. We can visit a museum (Vizcaya for example). Go on an air boat ride or rent some jet skis. There’s plenty of adventures downtown Las Olas or South Beach or any beach for that matter.
We probably worked up an appetite by now so we’ll have to hit up a restaurant for some lunch. Your taste buds will determine where we eat at. I’m not a picky eater so I’m down to try all types of food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shoutout to my father Rodney J Bell who passed the day before Father’s Day back in 2022. He was everything to me and more. Rodney was my best friend and greatest inspiration. We did just about everything together and he’s one of the reasons why I draw so much and love boxing and martial arts with all of my heart. My legacy is his legacy and I’ll do everything in my power to honor his life by succeeding like he wanted me too.
I can’t forget my brothers that are a part of Ring Gang Radio which is the boxing media website and platform that I helped create. There are 9 of us that are located across 3 different continents and 4 time zones that combine like Voltron when its time to create boxing content, whether its a boxing podcast, interview, or animation, they have my back and I’ll always have theirs. Big shout out to Patscorpio, PJ the fight Architect, Rome Top 5, Prolific Genius1, Clanarchy, Deezy, King P and Conscious Pilot. Can’t forget Jonathan who always been the best behind the scenes advisor you could ask for. Remember sometimes it takes a team to reach the dream.
