We had the good fortune of connecting with Sompa Adhya-Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sompa, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make was leaving full-time employment and choosing to dedicate all of my efforts exclusively to my private practice in mental health therapy as well as my leadership consulting business. It was a personal decision rather than just a career decision, as I needed to prioritize my own well-being and find a better work-life balance. Like many of us, the COVID-19 pandemic gave me the time and opportunity to reflect, which revealed and clarified my personal values, making me realize the importance of being present in my own life.

Although there were fears and uncertainties about the future and how it would directly affect my family, I knew deep down that I had to operate based on my interpersonal boundaries and core beliefs. I had to trust that I was a successful therapist and business owner and had the self-confidence to make the jump.

I had faith in my ability to become fully self-sufficient and operate independently in my own business. I had carefully crafted a plan based on what I knew to be true and relied on my best thinking. My core beliefs, education and experience became my guiding principles in making one of the biggest decisions of my life.

I sought support from mentors and other women who had already gone through a similar journey. I watched them succeed and struggle, learning valuable lessons from their experiences. Having these resources available to me was instrumental in boosting my confidence and providing guidance along the way.

One of the most motivating factors was the impact this decision would have on my children. I wanted them to witness their mother accomplishing something major, and their awe and wonder fueled my determination. It was ironic that the very advice I gave my clients about self-care became a driving force for me. I couldn’t preach self-care and not practice it myself.

The most intriguing part is that my past and current clients were unknowingly the ones who motivated me to take this leap. Seeing their progress and growth inspired me to challenge myself and create a life that aligned with my values. I realized that I couldn’t ask them to step out of their comfort zones if I wasn’t willing to do the same.

Overall, making this decision required immense courage and faith in myself. It wasn’t easy, but I knew it was the right path for me. I am grateful for the support I received and the invaluable lessons I learned throughout the process.

What should our readers know about your business?
In both my private practice, The Curious Self and leadership consulting business, The Curious Leader, I specialize in and have a deep understanding of Bowens Systems Theory, which is a theoretical framework that explores the interconnectedness of individuals and their environments by understanding how the self impacts our relationships both at home and at work. This knowledge allows me to provide comprehensive and holistic support to my clients.

What I am most proud of and excited about is my decision to go fully independent. Previously, I held positions as the Director of Counseling Services at Johnson & Wales University and as an Associate Dean of Students and Case Manager at the University of Miami. Over the past 21 years, I have worked as a licensed clinical social worker in various agencies and have always maintained a part-time private practice. However, taking the leap to establish my own practice full-time has been a significant milestone for me.

Getting to where I am today was not easy. In the past, I used to prioritize others’ wants and needs, often neglecting my own. However, once I started showing up as my true, authentic self in my sessions and in my personal businesses, I began to receive what I wanted. I learned the importance of putting myself first while still maintaining personal boundaries. Clients have told me that they find me relatable, which I believe stems from my commitment to making them feel seen, validated, and heard. These are fundamental human needs that we all desire.

Stepping out of my comfort zone was a necessary part of my journey. Despite being extroverted, I have always felt uncomfortable being in the public eye due to fear of judgment. My comfort zone used to revolve around having someone else to blame for any negative outcomes. However, going independent meant I had to overcome the reliance on others and take full responsibility for myself and my brand. There was no else to blame other than me and my LLC!

Throughout this process, I have learned valuable lessons. Working with various agencies and universities, I observed the importance of mission statements and core values in guiding our work. Witnessing the dedication to these principles inspired me to establish my brands based on a clear mission and my own core values. It has provided a solid foundation for the operation of my businesses and reminds me of my why every day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would show them the best time ever in my special way! Buckle up for a week of non-stop fun and excitement as we explore the vibrant South Florida lifestyle together.

First, we’d head to Miami Shores, a place close to my heart since my three children call it home. We’ll take a stroll through the charming neighborhood, admiring the beautiful houses and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.

Next stop, Wynwood, where we’ll be immersed in a world of incredible street art. Prepare to have your Instagram feed explode with envy as we pose in front of the colorful and mind-blowing murals that grace the walls.

Of course, we can’t miss out on the ultimate Miami experience: people-watching. Find a cozy spot in one of the trendy cafes or restaurants along Ocean Drive in South Beach and let the parade of interesting characters entertain us. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

To truly relax and unwind, we’ll pamper ourselves at The Standard Spa. Their luxurious treatments and serene atmosphere are the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, especially in Miami.

We’ll then channel our inner Rocky Balboa and sign up for a boxing or strength-training class at V3-P. It’s a great way to get those endorphins pumping while unleashing our inner fighters.

For some fun in the sun, we’ll head to Surfside Beach. Grab your beach towel, slather on the sunscreen, and get ready to soak up some rays on the pristine white sand. We can take a dip in the refreshing turquoise waters or simply relax under the shade of an umbrella while sipping on a colorful cocktail.

When hunger strikes, we’ll make our way to The Citadel Food Hall. With a wide variety of mouthwatering options from local vendors, we’ll feast on delectable bites from all corners of the world. It’s a foodie’s paradise! Their rooftop bar is a regular spot for me as I’ve attended plenty of weekly meetings with my business partners and colleagues and networked at various charity events. It’s all about fostering connections and building relationships while supporting the vibrant community we’re in.

During our adventures, we’ll make sure to support independent small businesses in Miami Shores and beyond. Shopping small is not only a great way to find unique treasures but also a way to contribute to the local community.

Miami is no short of fun and laughter and whoever is out with me is guaranteed to have a wonderful time while somehow reflecting on themselves and the wonderful city throughout the way.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my 85-year-old father, who is still actively working and has yet to retire. His perspective on work has deeply resonated with me. He views work as his hobby, questioning why he would ever resign from something he enjoys so much.

He is not only my father but also my mentor. He is a huge innovator in the scientific community, making significant contributions during his 50 years of service at the National Institute of Health for Cancer Research.

His story is one of immense inspiration to me. Leaving behind everything he knew in India, he took a tremendous risk by coming to the US to pursue higher education. This bold step he took motivated me to embrace risk-taking in my own life.

One of the remarkable qualities of my father is his ability to captivate others with his storytelling, humor, generosity, kindness, and inviting nature. Despite his high-level position in the scientific field, he has always managed to inspire me as his daughter. His influence propelled me into becoming a therapist because, like him, I love listening to my clients’ stories and creating a safe space filled with kindness and humor. I strive to invite people to be themselves and feel at ease in my sessions.

Modesty and humility are at the core of my father’s character. Despite receiving countless recognitions, he remains incredibly humble. He embodies the concept of an unsung hero, making a significant impact without seeking the spotlight.

In my profession as a therapist, we don’t receive testimonials or outward-facing rewards. Instead, we witness the behind-the-scenes transformations of our clients without needing to broadcast them. It’s a profession where the rewards are often unspoken but deeply felt.

My father has also taught me the importance of networking and building a community where we can support and help one another. This skill has been invaluable in my work as a therapist, allowing me to connect with colleagues and create a supportive network.

I am grateful for the influence of my father, Sankar Adhya, in shaping my perspective on work, kindness, and community. He deserves recognition for his incredible contributions and the inspiration he has provided in my journey.
