We had the good fortune of connecting with Smile Urena and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Smile, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I wanted to do things right, I did not want to just sell paintings and hats without the proper introduction. I felt that if I want people to take me serious about my work, I needed them to see and respect my craft. Therefore, not starting a business was not an option.

Also there are perks of owning a business such as, having a business account and credit which can give you leverage for any future projects that needs investment.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Beside the splatters and the colors I just in my paintings and hats what had set me apart is the energy and person who I am as artist. It is not only the art that I create it is also the connection that I try to make with the world. Not only sharing my craft but also who I am and what goes on behind “the scenes” when I am creating or making an artwork.

I am excited about upcoming projects that involve clothing and helping the community. I love helping or inspiring others that’s what make me proud, when I see someone that I can help in any capacity as any type of success is the ultimate goal.

If I said that I got myself where I am today, I will be lying. GOD, my partner, family, and friends have been the ones who have helped and supported me to get where I am today.
It has not been easy to achieve any goals small or big but staying consistent has been the key for me. Also not taking for granted any opportunity given to me. It very easy to lose focus when you achieve some success.
Whenever I struggle and lose motivation God has always lifted me up and put me in the right mind set. God is good!!
Through this journey I have learned that mistake are part of the learning process I feel that we all need to good through them I order to grow. The mistakes I’ve learned have helped me grown professionally and personally as well.
I want the world to recognize my brand for the #hatonthecanvas, art and splatter painting with vibrant colors.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Where can have cuban coffee at a local bodega/grocery for the best experience. Get healthy cake or empanada from Code Wise in 955 Alton Rd. Go to the market in Miami Design District, have tacos in Wynwood. Hang out in Brickell. GO TO THE BEACH, north beach in particular.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

There are so many people who had played a huge role in my success. Starting with my partner who had encouraged me to be better as an artist, friend, brother and son. She is the backbone of my success. My family with their unconditional love that has always kept me humble and loved. My friends who has supported me from the very beginning specially the ones from Brutal Boxx. There are a lot of friends and I love them all. THANK YOU GUYS, LOVE YOU ALL!!
