We had the good fortune of connecting with Leide Porcu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leide, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Since I was a child I’ve been interested in people, their languages and customs. I came to the field of psychology from the field of anthropology. The study of psychoanalysis and psychology developed as I wanted to understand and relieve people’s suffering, including my own. Opening my private practice was not difficult, as my psychoanalytic institute, IPTAR, fosters the development of its trainees’ private practice.
Being a psychotherapist was a no brainer for me, since I value independence, helping others and intellectual stimulation. I spend my work time having meaningful conversations with interesting people; when they are in pain I help them recover. When they are confused, I help them find clarity. I participate in their growth and development and I am paid for it. I do not make an absurd amount of money, but isn’t this a great way to be in the world?
What should our readers know about your business?
Having a successful business requires love and dedication. I am passionate about my work because it helps me keep in touch with what is essential in life and with the truths and needs that people have. As a licensed psychoanalyst in New York, New Jersey, and Vermont, I see a big chunk of the world in my office and online and I very much appreciate the diversity of my practice. In my work, I can creatively bring together my therapeutic stance and my tools to alleviate suffering and promote change. I collaborate with my patients/clients and using our collective knowledge we create a better path. I have worked with many immigrants and temporary and second generation residents. I love this population perhaps, because I am an immigrant. In the last few years I’ve been working on a self-help book to help immigrants and other people in transition between cultures and places. It’s the book I wish I had when I moved to the U.S. almost thirty years ago. The moment it’s published I will let you know.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
New York has amazing free offerings. I would bring them to our parks that are beautiful and offer plenty of events: Central Park; the Hudson River with all its peers and Little Island; Domino’s Park, Greenwood Cemetery, and endless walks in all the five Boroughs. I may bring them to Norma for a good pizza and other delicious moderately priced Italian food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
IPTAR, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research offered a solid basis for my development. My supervisor Debra Schnall at the beginning of my training was a fundamental guide. Very important in my development were also the Beck institute and the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies and the many meditation courses I took over the years. My favorite places have been Sivananda Bahamas, Insight Barre, and the courses of the Contemplative Studies Project.
