We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivan Canales and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ivan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Well Bathroom Break Podcast was something I always wanted to do, I wanted to have platform where I could ask the questions I wanted to ask. I felt like most male driven podcast were all basically kind of the same, the subject matters tend to be the same Sports, Crypto( be your own boss) , or stories about how they’d hook up with girls. I always felt like people were taking themselves to serious, so I wanted to do a show completely from all that. Basically make a show where I make fun of myself and the things and experiences around me. Now the actual name of the show “Bathroom Break” came from Instagram, my job is strict on phone usage. So I found myself going to the bathroom more and more, basically just to reply to text or go on the internet and look up funny stuff and post it on social media. So from there I would interact with people and they would always know I was using the bathroom, and the gimmick stuck. And honestly it fit perfectly with my idea for the show. I wanted to give people and myself a platform to share embarrassing stories, to be vulnerable.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Bathroom Break recently made a year and I can honestly say all the love and support the show has gotten in that short span of time is amazing, definitely exceed all expectations. I didn’t want the show to be just one thing, I wanted to delve into all sorts of topics, from crappy dating situations to the overwhelming experiences of a nurse. From Red Flags to the thought processes that go into writing a song, I wanted a variety of things so my listeners and myself wouldn’t get bored. At the beginning I will admit I was nervous, I didn’t know if people were actually going to tune in, I was scared that people wouldn’t like my stories. But sometimes we are our worst enemies and we get in our own ways, we sometimes have to tune ourselves out and just make that leap. The main lesson I’ve learned and want to share with whoever is reading this is, be careful who you take advice from. Not everyone is going to share your best interest, sadly some people want to see you fail. Sometimes they don’t realize the damage they’re inflicting, a lot of times people assume because they failed, you’ll fail too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The beautiful thing about Miami is the diversity in our food culture. We have a little of everything from high end restaurants in Brickell to mom and pop shops all over Kendall. Miami is so much more than South Beach. I feel like everyone needs to experience Versailles at least once in their life. I still remember being a kid and going with my mom and randomly meeting Alonzo Mourning at the ventanita. Not really a fan but a stop at Wynwood feels necessary, definitely a cool place to check out during the day see all the murals and graffiti, but also to check out all the cool food spots around Wynwood like Kush and the Taco Stand. And of course no Miami trip would be complete without hitting up the beach. I would have to explain how mandatory the trip to Publix is, to pick up the essentials aka a Pub Sub. And for my personal choice of beach “Mid Beach” away from the tourist trap that is South Beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout definitely belongs to my girlfriend Ashley. She has supported me from the very beginning, I wouldn’t be able to do the show without her motivation. She tunes in to every episode, not only to support but to also give me constructive criticism. I truly am lucky to have her in my life. Also a shoutout to all the amazing guest that have come on the show, I always tell people they’re the ones that make the show I’m just here tagging along. And of course all the fans and listeners of the show, I promise to continue to improve the podcast and deliver content that everyone can enjoy.
