We had the good fortune of connecting with Cole Davidson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cole, how do you think about risk?
The real risk would be spending your life chasing things that other people expect you to chase. I see a lot of people doing that. It’s out of fear and I understand that. But, I made the decision a long time ago to ignore that impulse. And, if you’re doing something you don’t enjoy for something bigger than yourself, whether it be for family or some sense of duty, then that’s almost obviously the right path and you should do what you feel is right. And, I think that can only be found in your gut. But, I’ve learned the minute you allow your instincts to guide you into taking leaps like that, people close to you, the universe, whatever, will try to throw you off balance and see if you can handle it. People will show you sides of themselves that weren’t there when they were benefitting from you. A risk worth taking would be to just let people spin and gossip in their attempts to claw you. They’re only hurting themselves in the long run. There’s no risk in making your intentions clear and listening to no one if all you start receiving is noise. So, I don’t even see chasing music as a risk, even though much of the universe is telling artists that it is. And if it is a risk, it’s worthwhile. I can really only speak for myself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I write songs, record them, and play them live in as many US states as possible. I have way more songs that I play live than you can find in my records. They’ll find their way onto Spotify eventually. I think the goal has been to refine songs to the point where I can show up to a venue with a guitar and give the audience an experience that’s as close as possible to how they’ll eventually be heard recorded. I’ve played with bands and my records have some band elements, and I’ll probably do more of that in the future, but at the moment I’ve found it important to strip everything back to guitar and vocals. Most musicians I look up to have done that. I think if you can get that process nailed down, the music’s more valuable – whatever that means.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I moved to Newport, Rhode Island in 2020. It was the best move ever. Everything is so old and storied, for better or worse. The homes and buildings were built back when society cared about architecture and old-school beauty. I lived near the water. I’d walk down to Bowen’s Wharf, meet my sister for lunch at Diego’s, surf at Second Beach, meet friends for live music at Newport Blues Cafe, chat with neighbors on the porch – the city knows what it is and does it well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has never steered me wrong and I have friends who have never left me. Those are the only blessings I’ll ever need. Shoutout to people who ask, listen, and don’t assume.
