Meet Kat Hoelck | Creative Director and Fashion Faculty

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Hoelck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Luke Campbell said ‘talent is nothing without dedication and discipline, and dedication and discipline is a talent in itself.’ When I have an idea, I have an unrelenting fire in my belly to chase that idea into reality. You have to show up and do what needs to be done even if you’re not in the mood.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I knew that when I was graduating from Parsons back in the early aughts that I wanted my career to be a path of constant learning and growth. From designing womenswear for Armani, accessories for J.Crew, to establishing my creative consultancy and freelance career, to my work co-founding ANYBAG, I’ve always been interested in using my ability to create beauty to change the way we look at the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a native west-coaster, who grew up seeing sherbert sunsets over the Pacific, my absolute favorite thing to do when I am in Miami is to have my toes in the sand for sunrise. I’ve lived in New York for the better part of the last 15 years, and when I am in Miami for work, I love to stay at The Edition and make my way out to the shore to watch the sun come up over the sea. Best way to start the day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was raised by a mother who could always seem to make magic with her hands; the type of woman who turns fabric into dress and flour and water into bread. Hearing her sewing machine whir through the night, seeing her ability to transform materials, and witnessing the beauty that she added to the world gave me a blueprint for life that is the foundation for my creative process.
