We had the good fortune of connecting with Mallory Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mallory, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my small business for a few reasons almost four years ago. At the time, I was looking for a creative outlet that would also allow me to increase my income, but it’s grown into my favorite hobby.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Like most little girls, I was intrigued by art and the fashion industry. My mom was constantly getting me new sketchbooks for my “designs” and I would pretend that I was a high-end designer in New York City. My mom and grandma would teach me how to sue and I’d dream of days where I could bring my “designs” to life. When I was in high school, I was fortunate enough to dual-enroll in college classes. I immediately signed up for art, and began to plaster my walls with paintings and projects from class. I kept my portfolio, that was bursting at the seams, slid under my bed for safe keeping. In my senior year, I applied to an art college in New York City, and I cried when I received my acceptance letter. Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford the private and out-of-state tuition so I didn’t go, and that decision weighed on me heavily throughout the years. I know this sounds cliché, but I really do believe that life works in mysterious ways and everything happens for a reason. As unexpected as it may seem, I work full time in the legal field and I have been for nearly 10 years. My small business is my creative avenue on nights and weekends; it’s where I finally get to color outside of the lines. Over the years, I’ve learned that time is always on your side and it’s okay if your plans don’t work out the first go around, because life may have other plans for you. It is never too late to create your dreams. I hope my clients know that when they support my small business, not only are they supporting my dream and my creativity, but that each and every piece is carefully repurposed by hand with love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to describe the perfect week with my best friend visiting, I would start by renting a yacht for an afternoon (it isn’t as expensive as it sounds, I promise) and we would parade around Miami’s skyline and go down Key Biscayne while enjoying the views and sipping champagne. Miami’s views are like no other, so that’s a non-negotiable. Another day I would take her up to Delray Beach on Atlantic Avenue for the farmers market and brunch. It’s perfect for supporting small businesses, buying fresh flowers, hand-made soaps, and petting all of the dogs. After we visit all the tents, we’d stroll over to Elisabetta’s Ristorante for brunch. What is a brunch without bottomless mimosas? I’m not sure, I don’t know her. Another day I’d show her around all of my favorite local thrift stores to support sustainable shopping (Poverellos for antiques, Think Thrift for clothes, and OddBalls Nifty Thrift for all things unique). There are tons of secondhand stores in the tri-county area, but those are a good starting point. For dinner I would take her to Komodo in Miami. The atmosphere, food, drinks, and dancers are unlike anywhere else. It’s always a 10/10 experience. After dinner, we’d head over to Sugar rooftop for their secret speak easy, the Tea Tree Room. Another day I would take her to watch the sunrise on the beach and then go to Michael’s Café for breakfast after. There is nothing like sitting in the sand and watching the sun come up, then going to a local café for iced coffee and eggs benedict. All in all, the possibilities are endless in South Florida, and this isn’t even scratching the surface of activities.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to use this opportunity to shoutout to my fiancé, Ryan, for always encouraging me with self-discovery and believing in me. He is my biggest cheerleader and I wouldn’t be where I am today without his support. When I first told him about my business idea in January 2020, he said I’d be silly not to do it. To this day, he keeps me company when I’m packing midnight orders.
