We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessie Gutz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessie, how do you think about risk?
Before entering the tattoo industry I was a high school art teacher. I had a comfortable and consistent job but it wasn’t as fulfilling as I had hoped it would be. Every day I would preach to my students the importance of art and what affect it can have on the world and everyday life. I decided I needed to lead by example and start taking risks myself. I started by showing art at a local coffee shop and vendoring in Downtown Las Vegas. It was absolutely terrifying experience putting the most vulnerable parts on display for thousands of people to see. The risk was completely worth it. I was accepted by the community and found like minded artists that wanted to change the community in a positive way. These experiences left such a positive impact on my life that I decided to pursue my dream career that I thought was unattainable which is tattooing. Taking this venture on has been such a high risk for me being a mom of two but it has been so worth it. I have met some of the most inspiring artists that aren’t just passionate about their own art but helping and collaborating with clients.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a tattoo artist located in the Chicago suburbs. I love to focus on Neotraditional, Anime, and Blackwork tattoos. I love the usage of bold lines and bold color concepts. Most importantly I love collaborating with my clients and creating pieces that are meaningful and will age well. I also focus on paintings and mural work with a neotraditional style as well. Like most tattoo artists, my journey on becoming a tattoo artist has not been easy. As I have entered this industry I have learned that there are a lot of fractures within the community and how apprentices are taught. It’s so important to focus on creating an environment of inclusivity and collaboration. Being a parent to two young children and working 6 days a week on top of drawing for years during an apprenticeship is absolutely soul sucking. It can also crush your vision and voice as an artist. However, I’m so happy that I didn’t give up. I know work in an environment that values me as an individual and an artist. It’s never to late to follow your dreams and work hard for something that can push you to be the best version of yourself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Alchemy Tattoo & Gallery – Although it’s a tattoo shop it also functions as a gallery and supports local artists as well. It has a very welcoming environment and I am very fortunate to work there.

Mitsuwa market place – I think this is a common place for most nerds and anime lovers.

Downtown Chicago – It’s so beautiful to walk in and observe people and life. I love going to a lot of heavy metal shows inside of the old theaters. The architecture and people are beautiful.

Vegas – anywhere in the 18bin. Thats where a lot of local artists hang out and sell art.
