We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonia Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonia, what matters most to you?
The value that matters most to me is Shakespeare to thine own self be true This is valuable because this philosophy keeps us connected with ourselves. Connection with ourselves is so important it keeps us grounded, it keeps us intentional about what we need and it keeps us knowing our direction. Lately, we seem to hear the word authenticity more often this philosophy is the beginning of authenticity..

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career actually began in exercise and my love for movement. In high school, I was introduced to sports and modern dance and could not imagine a life without physical movement. When I moved to Georgia I really believed my impact on people and helping would derive from helping them to be healthy through movement and I became a certified fitness instructor and coach. I traveled regionally the metropolitan area of Atlanta in this capacity, then after entering Georgia state university I continued the study of movement with modern dance and theater Here is where I had my introduction to the study of psychology and soon realized that this was how I Would help. Being a psychologymajor, I learned so much about myself, my history, and where I was going, I’ve got to give credit to Georgia State University, I also minored in African-American studies. This programming here was stellar yes it was a challenge to me, but I have to say I loved every minute of it. I’ve learned never give up, always dream and believe in your dreams. Another philosophy that I absolutely live by. Sometimes we get to a place to where we feel too tired, too old, or just no idea of how to start I never thought these to be reasons to not fight for what lives inside of us, when I became a mother, you can imagine my sense of responsibility and actual abilities changed drastically but at that same time I decided was also more of a reason to fight for who I was. I think something that sets me apart is that with two children, and young children ages 3 and 5 is when I became strongest in my career endeavors, I graduated graduate school and worked full-time in the judicial system with treatment courts that gave attention to mental health, addiction and veterans and if that wasn’t enough I became a NFL cheerleader for the Tennessee Titans. Most people would think there is no way you could juggle all of these things and what I learned through this process is when you do what you love anything is possible . With Titans, I could be competitive, physical and connect with my first love, music and movement. I was with the Tennessee Titans, for six years, where I was a captain for three years, and represented as their Pro Bowl cheerleader, what an experience. It was definitely worth the work. This taught me the value and beauty of balance, some believe if you work hard play hard and I don’t think there’s any more harder play than NFL football.

I have a private practice that is called Unlimited Limits, where I offer counseling, consulting, work shopping, creating developing and other various services and the behavior and mental health world. I also have my first project on streaming platforms it can be found by searching Tonia Dixon, LPC Sounds, Ground, Relax.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, this is a cool question the beginning of the visit let’s say day, one and two would be time to decompress, catch up with each other and just relax at home. This is where I would cook dinner and break bread together. Growing up this was always such an area of love and affection with family. I believe our friends are an extension of family and I would begin the visit by extending this type of love and affection plus I love to cook. The middle of the visit depending on our location we would go and visit the water. It could be a river, the ocean, whatever availed itself I love the water I love how it grounds me and calms me. I would also use this time to watch the sunrise and sunset together. I think this would be a good way to bond our friendship always having this memory.. Now we are around day five or so I would use this time to take her to my favorite places for live music. I have to say I have the benefit of living in a city where live music is always available. I would probably spend a couple of days taking her to all of my favorite places to hear the different genres of music that Nashville offers. and we’d probably end the visit brunching, I love brunching and mimosas. We would share this experience, introducing her to my social circle here she would always have laughter, living and fun..

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to the late great Maya Angelou. It was my favorite pastime reading her books, understanding her story and aligning myself with her many enlightening quotes. I finally had the privilege of meeting her in Atlanta Georgia by way of one of my sisters, also befitting of another shout out my family. I come from a family of five sisters and one brother where I am the youngest. I grew up privileged to always have the protection of family through modeling, protecting and ensuring nothing but the best of care. I’ve always felt confident in my talents and abilities, this is where it started.
