We had the good fortune of connecting with Elsa Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elsa, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Worcester Massachusetts, of Colombian parents. My father had won an scolarship to Clark university, and found out about it after already married and my mom expecting me.
We moved back to Colombia after the diploma was completed, somewhere by my 3 years of age. The travels and culture I was presented to both in Colombia and the USA make me see it all with an open mind and still the curiosity of a little girl. I like to think of myself as someone very tolerant, I put my efforts toward it at least 🙂
I try new foods easily; I’m truly mesmerized with what grows everywhere, cooking methods, the reasons to gather around a table and local customs and holidays.
I think that since birth, and all days forward I will be traveling and loving it. Before hand I’m acquainted with what locals do, where they eat, the artisan works, foods; I like to see it all from the genuine eyes.
Everywhere I have been, I have found great people, enriching stories, new ways to do things. Growing up in Bogota, but knowing I was born 2600 miles north has taught me that there is always something else, there is always another chance.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have seen my creative side bloom, but also adjust and evolve with time.
My business has a side of goods but also more recently the side of services.
It has gone through its fare share of faces, from making extra to travel, to really a great chunk for expenses, to a fundraiser, then to teach others.
In essence I’m that: a creator. I have seen many expressions of arts growing up. Uncles and cousins musicians and jewelry makers, a mother who was able to turn a dull cardboard into an oil painted ocean and upcycled fabric flowers; an awesome writer vein of my dad to include a beauty do handwriting to sisters who are great cooks, family of writers, great humans all of them,
As of today, I continue to be permeated by all those (and more) expressions of art and folklore. I was also told that if I could think of it, I could make happen. My business on the goods’ branch has organized jewelry fashion shows, fundraisers, still sell in stores in the Midwest and hopefully soon in Florida and in.
My works are truly personalized and one of each, even if they are in the same category of accessories. My rack of bracelets for example go great next to a cash register, and are fantastic for that last round – up item. But our forté I want to say it’s the item we make for a special occasion, with someone in mind, their hobbies, favorite colors, choice of materials and even a budget if given.
We do all in our means, video conference, pictures, adjustments until fully approved we don’t stop 🙂
I do all I can to make them with clean materials, may I upcycle and repurpose by all I give my all so they are sustainable and environmental friendly.
I believe those materials and a true love in print on them make my works recharged with a very special energy.
In the side of services I teach and organize workshops with a special componer of art therapy if requested.
I also teach languages, localize concepts, edit in Spanish English and French. After teaching and tutoring in languages I added cooking and law to my options. Had I know I would love it this muchas I would have started way earlier!
May times I see my own art as a blessed way to channel thoughts, or re-channel them. I am constantly taking classes of art, Art Therapy and more; ethically speaking I had to bring more of that to the table and share with others, it’s such a colorful and/ir delicious way to mindfulness and well being.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is something I do very often. There is a side of me, which is like a cultural broker. I love to drive, I have great music on as much as I can , which is perfect for local sightseeing. Everywhere I have been, I tend to visit places that locals go to, Eat when the locals eat, and do things locals do as much as possible. If I had a friend, which happens often, we usually start a day with a good cup of coffee, breakfast, and then we will hit the local farmers market, and visit what locals would visit : a local festival, somewhere with history of the town, local foods, many pictures. I am also a fan of visiting something new, or attend an event that is not always there something new.
Making time to see locals walk by, or be immersed in the city vibes is such a great souvenir too. Siting down to listen to my guests is key too..
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Patricia Salamin invited me to Shoutout. But it is also true that I have been always surrounded by amazing people. I have a great, large family. My daughter Mariana to start. From parents to 2 sisters and a nephew; cousins, uncles and aunts. And the family I choose of friends, colleagues, to include my former in-laws. My clients too and those that consider me an artists and support my social media even if I don’t know them play a huge part in my love affairs with colors and textures 🙂
