We had the good fortune of connecting with Hector L Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hector L, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
For me, the most paramount value in coaching is respect for the athlete’s individual journey. Each athlete brings a unique life story to the starting line, and understanding that is the bedrock of my coaching philosophy. As a triathlete coach, I place immense importance on recognizing and nurturing not just the athlete’s physical capabilities, but also their mental fortitude and emotional resilience. This holistic approach ensures that when physical boundaries are pushed, the athlete is supported and prepared to tackle the challenge head-on, embodying the transformative process of becoming a triathlete—dedicated, determined, receptive, and humble. This respect for the personal evolution each athlete undergoes aligns with my commitment to setting personalized goals, and devising clear, realistic plans to reach them, thereby cultivating a path to success that is as individual as the athlete themselves.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey as a triathlon coach spans a diverse spectrum of athletes, including age-group competitors, youth, juniors, and Paratriathletes. Yet, my career took an unexpected and transformative turn when Wynne McFarlin approached me with a pioneering proposal: to spearhead a triathlon program for the Special Olympics. Initially taken aback by the fact that such a program didn’t exist anywhere in the USA, I was awash with excitement at the challenge. The gravity of the venture was clear, but so were the breakthrough opportunities it promised. With ardent conviction, I pledged my commitment—”Count me in.” At the outset, our inaugural meeting was humble, with only six athletes attending. Among them were Adrienne Bunn, Jonathan Sady, Kenneth, Chris Nikic, Andrew Ahearn, and Kyle—each with unique challenges, such as Autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and dyslexia. With little to no triathlon experience among them, we were embarking on uncharted waters. Yet through dedicated coaching and communal support, we championed their growth. The pinnacle of this was witnessed in 2020, when Chris Nikic defied odds to become the first individual with Down Syndrome to complete a Full Ironman at Ironman Florida in Panama City. Chris’s momentous finish was more than a personal victory; it sent ripples of inspiration worldwide—proving that with a supportive coach and team, perceived limits can be transcended, and dreams realized.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d want to give them a taste of the active lifestyle that defines our area and the spirit of triathlon. Mornings would start early with a swim at the National Training Center, making the most of the world-class facilities. We’d refuel with a healthy lunch at Fresh Kitchen, known for its bowls brimming with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Post-lunch, we’d tackle the hills of Clermont on our bikes, challenging ourselves against the terrain that has groomed countless athletes. Evenings would offer a change of pace—we’d unwind at Jaleo in Disney Springs, indulging in Chef José Andrés’ culinary delights, a perfect mix of nourishment and festive ambiance. Throughout the week,
I’d introduce my friend to the incredible community of the CFL Tri Club during our training sessions, welcoming them into the camaraderie that makes our team more like family. It wouldn’t just be about the training; it would be about sharing experiences, from witnessing breathtaking Floridian sunsets to discovering hidden trails that tell the story of our land. We’d cap off the week with a local event or race, giving them a firsthand feel of the exhilarating atmosphere that only a triathlon community can offer. This week would be about sharing my world with them—where passion meets discipline, and where every day is an opportunity to surpass our limits.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to take a moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family and the unparalleled athletes of the CFL Tri Club. For 19 cherished years, you have entrusted me with the honor of coaching you, guiding your incredible journeys across countless finish lines, and surpassing the bounds of what we once deemed unachievable. Together, we’ve transformed ambition into accomplishment. To my partner, Brooks—your unwavering faith in me has been a beacon of support and companionship. Each stride we’ve taken together has been fundamental to the success we’ve shared. Thank you for being my steadfast ally throughout this remarkable odyssey.
