We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I have never been deterred by failure. I have tried a ton of ideas that didn’t work at all. I have offered products that NO ONE bought, and launched ideas that fell flat immediately…. but without the courage to try new things, I would never have found all of the aspects of my business that ARE working really well. I wouldn’t have gotten here without all those mistakes.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my photography business young, when I was fresh out of school. I started working for other photographers, carrying their equipment, and setting up lighting for them… and I learned a LOT that way. Gradually I started taking on clients of my own. My business grew until I was booking enough weddings to stop assisting other photographers, and I started to thrive. I loved shooting weddings. Wedding photography was always seeing people at an incredibly joyful time of their lives, and getting to celebrate someone every weekend.

When I had kids of my own, the weddings got harder. I wanted to be home with my family on the weekend, and not working EVERY Saturday and exhausted every Sunday. I stopped accepting wedding assignments and started to pursue commercial clients. It too a few years to get my momentum back, but I now make marketing easy for businesses and entrepreneurs by providing quality photography for their websites, social media and printed marketing materials.

What set me apart from other photographers is the connection I’m able to make with the people in front of my camera. I hate being photographed, so I totally understand how uncomfortable it can be. Over the years I have developed techniques to put people at ease, boost their ego a bit and create a space for a minute in which they can feel their best so that they look their best in the images. This works on brides, and CEOs alike, so I’ve used the same skills in both chapters of my career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Philadelphia there is a ton to do. For someone who had never been to the city, I would suggest a walk along boat house row by the river (especially in spring when the cherry trees are in bloom) After that I would suggest a walk through the Barnes Museum, one of the best art museums in the world. You can eat ANYWHERE in Phily, the food here is outstanding no matter what level you want… Check out Suraya Restaurant for some Lebanese food (I’d never had anything like it before and was blow away by the flavors.) … or try Dandelion Restaurant for a fireside cocktail and delicious bite. Check out Wonderspace, which is an interactive, walk-through art experience like no other.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friend Heidi has been supportive EVERY step of the way. She was there in the beginning, when I had just started working in my living room, and she’s cheering me on today as my business grows and thrives even more.
