Hi Karen, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Born into a family deeply rooted in the world of couture, I discovered my passion for creativity early on, designing pieces at home under the guidance of my couturier mother, Lydia Sabag. My formal education at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York refined my skills, paving the way for my journey as a designer. In 2006, I took over from my mother and founded Karen Sabag New York, serving as the Creative Director. With locations in Brooklyn and Manhasset, the brand is renowned for its ability to capture the essence of the female form, creating elegant, modern, and timeless pieces that are inclusive for all.
Working closely with my team of artisans, tailors, and seamstresses, I oversee every creation, ensuring the use of the finest materials and craftsmanship. My mother and I, a dynamic mother-daughter duo, have cultivated deep connections with generations of clients, embodying the values of hard work, good intentions, and openness.These values, rooted in my upbringing, are integral to how I live and create. In essence, my background has shaped not only my creative vision but also my commitment to authenticity, dedication, and the joy of crafting something beautiful and timeless.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At Karen Sabag, our art is the epitome of couture, defined by the highest level of craftsmanship and techniques. What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to the art of corsetry, making fit a top priority to ensure our clients not only look stunning but also feel comfortable in their attire. Our bridal couture at Sabag is a meticulous process, utilizing the finest fabrics and craftsmanship. We pride ourselves on working closely with each bride from the initial design conception to the final completion of their gown. Professionally, my journey has been a testament to staying true to myself and overcoming numerous obstacles in the fashion industry. It has never been easy; fashion demands staying ten steps ahead with ABCD backup plans always in place. The sleepless nights, tears, highs, and lows are part of the journey, but my passion for fashion has been a driving force. Consistency and delivering only the best have been pivotal in my professional growth.
The fashion industry is inherently challenging, but our commitment is to find solutions to every obstacle. The love for my craft is what keeps me motivated through it all. I’ve learned valuable lessons every day, from my mom, different clients, family, friends, and every encounter. The industry is a constant source of inspiration and growth.
What I want the world to know about Karen Sabag is the love and attention to detail infused into everything we do. Our craft is a labor of passion, ensuring that each piece is a unique masterpiece. The relationships we build with our clients are sacred, and their comfort and satisfaction are at the core of our creations. Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a week-long adventure, I’d make sure my friend gets a taste of the city’s vibrant mix of art, nature, and culture. We’d kick things off with a beautiful day at Central Park in the spring soaking up the fresh vibes amidst the city buzz. We would also have to dive into the artsy side, stopping by one of my favorites the Frick Museum on Madison to view the new exhibits and catching a ballet at Lincoln Center. Then, of course, we can’t miss a Broadway play – the whole drama, set design, and makeup never gets old. I love watching the story unfold. We’d also take a trip down fashion memory lane passing time in my favorite way at the New York Public Library and the FIT Library. Exploring the stories of designers and discovering all different kinds of inspiration through eye-catching visuals. As for the food, the city has such a diverse food scene, from hidden gems to famous joints there are so many options. And, of course, for a night out. I love a spicy margarita or a refreshing sangria, so a trendy relaxed bar would be on the agenda for some drinks and city lights.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, Lydia Sabag, has been an immense influence on who I am and where I am today. Learning from her, I had the privilege of being exposed to the beauty of creativity throughout my life. Watching her create and work so beautifully not only inspired me but also laid the foundation for my own path. Working alongside her every day is a privilege that I will forever cherish, and I am incredibly grateful for her guidance and support. Secondly, my husband, Josh, is an integral part of my story. He has been a constant source of support, standing by me as I chased my dreams. Juggling the craziness of running a fashion house and being an amazing father to our three kids, Josh has proven to be the best partner in life. His unwavering encouragement and understanding have been essential in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship. With the support of my mom and husband by my side I’ve been able to turn dreams into reality, and for that, they both deserve every bit of credit and recognition in my story. But of course, I owe so much credit to an incredible community of loyal clients who have supported and believed in my work. Their unwavering trust and appreciation for my designs have been instrumental in the success of my fashion house. Their feedback, enthusiasm, and loyalty have not only fueled my creative endeavors but also played a significant role in the growth of my brand.
