Meet Zahid Mayo | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Zahid Mayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zahid, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

At the core of my being, I’ve always been drawn to challenges and adventures, and expressing me through art has been a source of joy since childhood. Art grants us the power to push the boundaries of imagination and thought, allowing for the exploration of ideas and dreams. Despite the inherent difficulties that come with being an artist, the act of creation provides a unique sense of empowerment, enabling us to observe and appreciate the beauty inherent in the enigmatic universe that surrounds us.

The beauty and depth of this experience are truly incomparable, understood only by those who immerse themselves in the realm of creativity, regardless of their chosen medium. However, just as there are no straight paths in the universe, the journey of an artist is rife with ups and downs. While some may perceive me as a creative soul comfortably nestled in their zone, freely exploring the limits of imagination, the reality is far from easy. It’s a journey fraught with complexities and obstacles, often unseen by others, demanding unwavering effort and dedication to navigate.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My story unfolds in the heartland of Punjab, where I attended a small government school in my village that lacked the trappings of modern education. There were no walls, no furniture or rugs to sit. We use to bring jute rugs to sit in the class. Despite its humble appearance, this school had some of the most inspiring teachers I’ve encountered. Many of them were skilled calligraphers, and I remember Sir Bashir Ahmed making beautiful drawings on blackboard with colorful chalks and inspiring us every single day. Under the guidance of these teachers, I not only learned the fundamentals of education but also delved into the intricate world of calligraphy. This early exposure planted the seeds of creativity in my soul, blossoming into a profound interest in drawing and other creative activities.

However, as I reached college, I found myself at a crossroads. Despite my parents’ wishes for me to pursue a career in computer science like normal people, my heart yearned for artistic expression. Unable to find fulfillment in the confines of academia, I made the bold decision to leave and embrace a simpler way of life: farming, so I worked at farm for few months yet, the allure of art never waned. Determined to pursue my passion, I set my sights on Lahore, the cultural hub of Pakistan. It was there that I found refuge at the Naqsh School of Art, immersing myself in the rich traditions of traditional art forms. This period of exploration laid the groundwork for my enrollment at the esteemed National College of Arts, where I earned my degree in Fine Arts.

The road to success was far from smooth. I encountered numerous obstacles along the way, working odd jobs to make ends meet. From laboring in ceramic factories to posing as a model for artists, I embraced every opportunity to fuel my artistic ambitions.

Despite facing rejection and setbacks, I refused to be deterred. I vividly recall my attempts to showcase my talents as a street portrait artist, only to be turned away time and again by the city’s upscale hotels. However, amidst the challenges, there were moments of grace. Peeru’s Cafe, a haven for artists and performers, welcomed me with open arms, providing me with a platform to share my craft.

Beyond the confines of galleries and institutions, I am passionate about bringing art to the masses. Drawing on my calligraphy training, I create installations that engage and inspire audiences in public spaces. Whether through my own poetry or the words of renowned thinkers, I seek to spark meaningful dialogue and foster a deeper appreciation for art and culture.

In 2018, I ventured into the world of wearable art, launching an art and craft brand to utilize my calligraphic designs. Though the venture faced challenges and it was closed in 2022 but I am working on relaunch these days.

My journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of creativity to transcend barriers. Through perseverance and passion, I continue to carve out my path in the world of art, one stroke at a time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

For a week-long trip, my ideal itinerary would start with exploring my favorite spots in Lahore before immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of the mountains.

We’ll kick off the journey with a visit to my studio, where we can have a cup of tea or coffee. Then, we’ll venture into Lahore’s historic Walled City, strolling through the Delhi Gate area to experience my site-specific public art project nestled in the narrow streets. As we meander through the rich tapestry of historical sites like the Shahi Hammam and Wazir Khan Mosque, we’ll make our way to my 1st art school, Naqsh School of Arts inside the Bhati gate, and perhaps indulge in a visit to the Faqir Khana Museum in next street. Our evening will be enchanted by walking through Texali gate towards the majestic sunset views from Lahore Fort, dining in the shadow of the magnificent Badshahi Mosque.

The following day, we’ll delve into Lahore’s rich cultural heritage with a visit to the Lahore Museum, soaking in the wealth of artifacts and historical knowledge. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy tea at my beloved college, NCA, or alternatively, at a charming dhaba in Anarkali if access isn’t possible and of course we will have my favorite Naan Tikki of Anarkali.

While Lahore holds endless treasures to explore, after a few days, I believe it’s time to venture into the mountains for a change of scenery. We’ll set off for Katas Raj Temple, a sacred Hindu complex surrounded by picturesque landscapes. From there, we’ll journey to the Khewra Salt Mines, marveling at the natural wonders hidden beneath the earth’s surface. To conclude our adventure, we’ll head to Taxila to witness the remnants of the ancient Gandhara civilization.

Though the week may fly by, I’m confident these experiences will leave a lasting impression, blending the cultural richness of Lahore with the awe-inspiring beauty of Pakistan’s natural landscapes.

I want to take a moment to give a heartfelt shoutout to someone who holds a special place in my heart: Shuja-ul-Haq, my dear friend and also my sculpture teacher. In the realm of educators, Shuja stands out as one of the finest mentors anyone could ask for. His journey and artistic practice are truly inspiring, deserving to be celebrated and shared with others.
