We had the good fortune of connecting with Anouck Jourdaa Painter, teacher and surfer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anouck Jourdaa, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success is finding joy not only in the achievement of a goal but also in the journey to reach it. Success is being content with your existence and still pursuing your dreams and personal growth. Success is knowing when a fight is worth fighting and accepting when you have outgrown a battle. Finally, success is being as happy about your own victories as you are about others’..

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My biggest achievement as an artist is to relentlessly create and never run out of ideas. People that have fallen in love with my art always praise me for my unique joyful vision of life. I have exhibited in all the cities I have lived, contributing to prestigious shows such as Paris Carroussel du Louvre or Art Basel Miami. These shows have demanded time and financial sacrifices and have left me a little bitter about the way the art world works. It seems money, as always, opens doors that have remained closed for me so far. I have yet to generate enough income to completely live off my art. I have only painted one tenth of my sketches and would love to sell and exhibit on larger scales.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start with a dawn patrol surf session if there are waves in Sobe that day. I would then go for brunch at Local House or Planta. For dinner I would definitely go to Joes Crab or Smith and Wollensky. I would take them skateboarding along Ocean Drive at night. Then go dance salsa at Yucca on Lincoln Dr.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother has been my biggest supporter since I started drawing at age 3. She has always found the words to make me feel confident about what my mind is creating. She has bought me supplies, has stood by my side and gave me a hand at countless art shows, always talking me up to every person who would listen. To this day, she is still inspiring me with her joy to live life to the fullest, and she always finds the time to give me feedback on everything I sketch.
