We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy S. Broderick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amy, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Building a life in the arts is about much more than inspiration. Success requires putting in the hours every single day and proceeding with determination and resilience. Big things occasionally arrive when that mythical lightning bolt stikes, but far more often, beauty and success are built incrementally day by day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My studio practice has evolved a great deal over time. At this point in my creative life, I use forgotten photographs, discarded office supplies, found atlases, and related ephemera to make complex paper compositions. What started out as doodling on staff meeting agendas has developed to become the main focus of my practice. I deconstruct and dissect all kinds of old materials – most of them school or office related – and reinvent them as elaborate hand cut and handwoven compositions. My work is time-intensive, as I carefully make elaborate, multi-layered images. My process marks time’s passing, and it’s my goal to draw people in and encourage them to pause, to look slowly, and to notice how one moment slowly yields to the next one. We live in an age of wonders, and the number of images available for us to enjoy at any given time is effectively unlimited. My work goes with that flow, by presenting multiple layered images at the same time, while also going against the flow, by offering a viewing experience that is as unique as it is slow.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to love about South Florida. When loved ones visit from out of town, we often start with sunrise at the beach and then grab a treat at Bread by Johnny. There are always exciting exhibitions to see. Galleries like mtn space in Lake Worth Beach and special seasonal projects like Onna House on Palm Beach are at the top of my list of favorite things. You can’t go wrong with a bike ride on the Lake Trail or a walk though Grassy Waters. Then wrap up the day with drinks and dinner at Coolinary or Ela, two of my neighborhood favorites.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success is made possible by all of my fellow arts educators out there hard at work in our community. We all work together to create and expand a vibrant and protected space where student artists of all ages can continue to grow their work and develop their voices. In the end, everyone has something unique and meaningful to contribute to the conversation.
