Meet Shelby Carter | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelby, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’ve moved from place to place my whole life. Staying at each spot for 1-2 years. My parents and I are very close. I was an only child at the time of my upbringing so it was just us 3. All through that time, I kept journals where I would write. I would act in local playhouses in musicals from a very young age. At the time it was very hard, feeling I didn’t have a belonging to any particular since I knew I wasnt gonna be at each spot long, but now that I’m older I’m really thankful for that. Moving around so much gave me the opportunity to recreate myself (at the time I didn’t get a chance to see it that way) and I was put in so many situations that were challenging, especially for a kid. It taught me how being authentically myself works the best for me, and that I have to be honest and love myself before I can have much success in other areas of life that I want to achieve.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of my art and I hope to get my music released so that it’s heard by people. I really think if I can get the chance for people to really listen to some of my music, that it can make them really feel and be able to connect with it. I definitely hold a chip on my shoulder. It seems like I’ve come a long way, I have over 200 songs recorded that I’d like to release and I only have 3 song released… it wasn’t hard for me at all, though. I feel most at home when I surrounded by people who are working on a shared dream with me, in the studio making music. It’s the best place in the world to be for me. It feels like the closest feeling I can get to what flying feels like in my dreams. With that being said, I still have a lot longer to go in my journey. My next hard pill to swallow is actually getting the music out and hoping that I’ll gather an audience that will give it a chance. It’s worth it, though.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to silver lake. There’s something magical about that area to me. I would take them to Venice pier and play at the arcade on the board walk, go on the Ferris wheel. Go surfing in Malibu, and spend some time in Topanga. I love the little hippy hole in the wall spots Topanga has to offer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to Christopher Trujillo (TitoJustmusic), for working long tireless hours with me in the studio building and creating my music and my sound. I also would like to shout out Benjamin Cina for working unlimited hours with me writing my music with me, teaching me piano, jamming with me in my band, and pushing me to be the best version of my artist that I can be. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for these two gentlemen.
