We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole aka Nixfunction Caicedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole aka Nixfunction, what do you attribute your success to?
A pivotal factor in my success is my boundless flexibility. I refuse to confine myself to specific categories, mediums, or types of collaborations. I constantly embrace new learning opportunities, whether it’s mastering a new painting technique, exploring cutting-edge technology, or finding innovative ways to grow my business. I also welcome insights from others by partnering with businesses across diverse industries. For instance, I showcased my artwork at Art Basel within Canadian fashion designer Maison Marie Saint Pierre’s showroom in the Magic City Innovation District. Another example is my collaboration with New York-based Magistrate Cigar Co., creating an exclusive Nixfunction X Magistrate Co. label available during Art Basel.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m Nixfunction, and I put the fun in dysfunction. My art takes on many forms, whether it’s painting my alter ego Elocin and my inner child Baby Elocin on a canvas or a street sign, creating large-scale installations with television screens, or exploring meditation to craft vibrant colorful Rorschachs. Each piece is an invitation to journey through my limitless imagination, embracing the beauty in chaos and the joy in every project.
When it comes to expressing myself artistically, I prefer to be limitless. I don’t confine myself to a single medium or style. Although I’ve always possessed artistic abilities, I didn’t always have the confidence to pursue a career in art. After high school, I gravitated towards fashion merchandising. I believed this industry offered numerous ways to be expressive and creative, and I felt it would bring me more success.
Working for Maison Marie Saint Pierre in the Wynwood Arts District was transformative. Surrounded by bold artists, I was immersed in an environment that fueled my creativity. Marie gave me the freedom to merchandise her designs in a gallery-style setting, turning the entire space into a living canvas. Although I’ve always painted and drawn with various materials, this experience allowed me to see the world as a vast canvas waiting to be filled. It was an opportunity to break boundaries and explore the full potential of my artistic vision.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday: Epicurean Fine Wines hosts an informative wine class with different sommeliers every week. This is a hidden gem in Downtown Miami. Most of the people who attend are local neighbors. The owner Monica Eliotte has created an amazing atmosphere where everyone feels like family.
Wednesday: Rollerblading down the Hollywood Boardwalk. This is one of the top places in Florida to inline skate. Its about 3 miles long and you can even skate to Dania Beach. There’s a skate group of about 35 people who meet every week at 7:30.
Thursday: Stroll through Design District it is practically an outdoor public gallery with luxury shops. Stop inside the Institute of Contemporary Art which is open and free to the public.
Saturday: Jolene Sound Room always has great DJ’s and posh people.
Sundays: Brunch at Contessa
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
