We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristian Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cristian, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I suppose there was never really a choice, I was in band and orchestra as early as elementary school, and my greatest passion was drawing, I was just good at these things. I won a couple of awards as a youngster from art and it just solidified that idea. That I was an “artist”. When middle school came around I did break away and pursue sports but I then discovered that I was a good singer, I fell in love with guitar hero, put the basketball down and picked up a microphone instead, I started a band that year and from the on, this was my life. I fell in love with writing in high school, picked up a film camera in my early 20’s. These are the things that call for my attention. So like I said, it’s for me. It has always been, It seems there was never a choice, now because art is hard I’ve dedicated just as much time to bartending and serving as to my art cause we need to get by. But the real work always continues behind closed doors. I love drawing and creating art, I love the feeling of writing a song I like, or a great line, or a great video script, these things move me in a way nothing ever will, my love language is sharing music and film, it is also my love language to create these things.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve made music for about 15 years, it started with metal and post hardcore with a band called What Dreams May Come FKA Some Will Be Saved and then radically switched to alternative R&B, with The LOFT. We popped off in the pre streaming era a little bit, the blogs loved us and the internet seemed to rock with what we were doing, that led to some fans that have thankfully stuck around through the years. I believe in the beginning we were similar to other artists but had a certain sound that was our own, we were big on movies, so we were making scores with beats, I was really into weird films and dark themes so things came across honestly, as we’ve progressed we’ve changed sounds time and time again but no matter the tone of the song, the personality of the song has always remained the same. I suppose I’m proud of the amount of people that have heard my music, we never have enough money to market and promote the way we’d want so everybody we reached, we reached organically, I don’t know how but I’m eternally grateful that a song like glass walls has been heard over a million times, and people have really loved it for five years. It’s not easy, and I’m still doing everything but I’ve always needed regular work to support my life, so music has unfortunately never been the only thing, I need to work outside my field. At the end of the day I’ve always loved the arts, and I’ll always pursue them, I draw, I write songs, I take pictures, I sing, design clothes, and although its not the main source of income, it’s the only thing I love. And it’s created with love, so if want to check out The LOFT (Music), Tonight’s Muse (Photo), clothing (SUITORS) or anything else, please do, it would be appreciated.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m boring and don’t get out much anymore, I used to go absolutely crazy but I’d say, a couple record store stops, yesterday and today records, sweat records, lucky records and stock up, I would take them to le sandwicherie in the day to get the frenchie. Go to a couple collectible stores, then at night go for a dinner at mandolin and go to Dantes hifi or something like that.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My good friend Antonio Noriega who was the best engineer the local Kendall scene ever had, he’s no longer in the game but he was crucial in my development, my good friend Rocci, he’s been essential ever since I lost the best producer one could ask for, my partner in crime for life Jose Machin, the other half of The LOFT and my current partner in our clothing brand SUITORS Miami
