We had the good fortune of connecting with Luissette Guerrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luissette, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from Valencia, Venezuela. I grew up in the suburbs of the city. Surrounded by farms and country, simple people. As my parents wanted me to pursue my passions for arts, they made the sacrifice to enroll me in the bests arts institutes in my hometown that where located of course in the bests areas of the city. Which were private and of course, I was surrounded by wealthy kids. To them I was the country girl but In my little town I was “that girl”. Therefore, I had the opportunity to live the best of both worlds and also the bad… that helped become very adaptive but also very true to myself, because in a way I was the “different one” in both scenarios. So, very early I knew I had a foot here and there, everywhere and nowhere at the same time. That we are all different of course, but the same too. So I am humble and proud of my roots, it makes me unique and I feel special for it. Also growing up in a farm made me love the slow processes and the smalls things too. I am constantly grateful for that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, I make/write music for me and other artists and I am also a performer. When it comes to making music, I write in spanish most of the time. I would say that as an artists I am very influenced by early 2000’s pop, alternative music and electronic music, I think someone who listens to those genres can Identify this by listening to my top lines (the melody of the lead voice in a song). However as I grew up in a Latin family, genres like Reggaeton, salsa, merengue, bachata, basically run in my blood, so when it comes to creating I never limit myself… neither do I when working with or for an artist. I just do what I feel the beat is asking for. Whatever comes to me. And actually that helps me discover parts of myself I didn’t know I had. When it comes to performance, I use my body a lot, it comes naturally, it frees me, it is my instrument too. I danced professionally since I was 7 till I turned 13, so I try to integrate my moves while I sing. It is super hard though! haha, but I love to push my limits everytime. I try to be better than the last time. And that is something that I’ve learned from this career… It is all about becoming a better version of yourself everyday, that is the key… and Inspiration comes from everywhere. I am still learning to be patient and not so hard on myself.
What I would like the world to know about my story/brand is that it is ok to be you, actually it is awesome. It is powerful. Even though we are born in certain situation, don’t let that be a weakness for you, make it your strength. If it makes you different, that is the point, be different, be you, love being you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
haha! fun question! hmmm… I would take them Yann Couvreur Café to have breakfast (this is my fav patisserie in town) then I would take them to the beach of course to chill a little, we would go on a boat maybe but definitely, we would end the day by having dinner somewhere we can go as we came from the beach, salty, sunkissed and tired. Lol. Maybe Ceviche105.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, my parents and myself of course. Both for never giving up. I personally think I am not even halfway through from where I dream to be. However, I am very proud of where I have gotten and forever grateful with my parents who have been my biggest fans, they are the perfect example of unconditional love and resilience. On th other hand, what comes to my mind is a little random too but I was also very inspired by Mulan’s story. You know? The Disney movie, lol. I was obsessed at the age of four, I felt very connected and it still hits me. There’s a quote from that movie that says “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all” that idea sticked to my mind and helped me stand on my feet while growing up during hard times.
