Meet Seth Crapp | Radiologist & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Seth Crapp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own radiology business mainly stemmed from the fact that I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. In fact, when I began medical school my initial goal was to be a family doctor with a private clinic. Since radiology tends to be dominated by hospital organizations and more recently corporations, I felt it was imperative to establish a footprint even if small to be an alternative for those who want a more personalized experience. It’s more of a concierge approach we take to provide radiology services. Our motto is “We provide professional radiology services with a personal touch.”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In an ever changing healthcare landscape, the one constant remains the need for high quality healthcare by top physicians which is the very thing which sets the United States healthcare prides itself on. Unfortunately, all of our citizens are not privy to or capable of receiving the same quality care. This inequity has led to a significant gap in the provision and administration of healthcare to the underserved population of the country. Since 2011, South Florida Radiology has been an independent physician owned teleradiology practice. After much deliberation, I decided to leave a hospital based practice & expand the company in August 2020 in an effort to correct these inequities & focus on communities lacking healthcare services. I am aiming to establish the first physical South Florida Radiology center in 2021. The need to bring critical medical services to the urban core, moreover specialized medical diagnostic imaging services coupled with a strong desire to reduce disparities largely attributable to lack of access and preventative care has led me to this undertaking. A major inspiration for this business endeavor was the founding of the X-Ray Clinic by Dr. Samuel Johnson, a fellow alumni of Meharry Medical College and South Florida’s first African-American radiologist in 1939. In the face of discrimination and against the odds, Dr. Johnson founded his radiology facility to bring services which were previously unavailable to his community. This has not been an easy task especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, I have learned that there are always opportunities but they may not be in plain sight so networking & communication are important to uncover them. Also patience is key. In a world where many have tenuous health care, I want to be able to assist those in need by forming partnerships with likeminded businesses and organizations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Although we have been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic if a friend were visiting I would make sure to take them to some of the more unique places we have in Miami. I love happy hour at Ella’s Oyster Bar in SW 8th St in Little Havana. There you can get a taste of our cuisine and see Cuban culture up close. After I’d head over to Empire Social in Brickell for some of the best cocktails and fine cigars in Miami. There’s no better place to relax or take in a sporting event. While in Brickell I always make my over to KOMODO whether it’s for late night eats & drinks or dancing. We are a boating center so a relaxing day out on the water would be ideal after a night out. Another favorite of mine is Garcia’s on the Miami River for great seafood especially since you can pull your boat up to the dock. Wynwood is always a great place to visit to walk around and see fantastic art and visit eclectic bars. Two of my favorite places there are Veza Sur Brewing & Wynwood Kitchen & Bar (WKB). I can’t forget South Beach of course. A lunch at Joe’s To Go & stroll on Deco Drive is always on my list when friends visit. On a weekend Brunch at Nikki Beach is fantastic. Those are a few places I can think of.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There were many people instrumental in my road to success but I want to acknowledge Dr. Richard Heller my professor & program director at Vanderbilt University & Dr. Barry McCook who was my department chair and program director at University of Florida for giving me the inspiration and many lessons they taught me not only related to radiology but in life.
