We had the good fortune of connecting with Meek Coley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meek, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from New York. I was born in Brooklyn, but lived in the Bronx and New Rochelle for awhile after that. I moved around quite a bit when I was younger. After NY, I moved to Maryland, then to Florida, then to Connecticut, and then finally back to Florida.
While I wouldn’t say I had a rough upbringing, but things had been quite difficult for me. I took solace in art. I remember being in elementary school and obsessed with watching Bob Ross and trying to copy everything he did. That love of creating and pouring myself into art has stayed with me since then, and has become an integral part of who I am, and who I always will be.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art consists of mainly a pop art style. I paint a lot of anime, comic book, movie/TV characters, sprinkled in with some portraits and original concepts. I think the thing that sets me apart, are my ideas. My art process really starts from an idea, and I am constantly having ideas! If I have a cool idea, I try and try to execute it, until my vision comes to fruition.
How did you get to where I am today professionally? Through connections and my own hard work. I still have a long way to go, this is only the beginning of my story, but I would say I try to meet and connect with other artists. I’m a big fan of the “a rising tide lifts all boats” mentality. So I will always try and work with and support other artists and overall support the community as a whole.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh wow! I would definitely take them to Wynwood. I think it’s just so rich with art, culture and things to do. The Wynwood Walls would be a definite stop. And just walking around itself is a dope hang out there. The Dirty Rabbit and Coyo for some night time fun. KUSH Wynwood and 1-800-Lucky for some good food!
Probably Sweet Caroline’s and Black Bird in Brickell. Then even some local spots I know, the Bend in Hialeah, and Falcon Pub in Davie (their wings are awesome).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, I would absolutely shout out my entire family. With their unconditional support and love, I don’t know where I would be right now. This including my fiancé, who comes with me to all my shows, helping me set and overall being a better partner than I could have asked for.
