We had the good fortune of connecting with Loup Barrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Loup, why did you pursue a creative career?
Pursuing an artistic career isn’t necessarily a conscious choice, it’s more a necessity that imposed itself on me from an early age. I was surrounded by musicians through my close family and family friends. I was immersed in the world of music from a very early age. I found a world of creativity and play that matched my curious and spirited nature.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been very curious and still want to push back the limits that are presented to me. In my career, I came across an instrument that became an important part of my life: The Cristal Baschet (a little-known instrument which I’m the only musician to play internationally).
I wrote an album for a symphony orchestra. The Cristal Baschet is used as a solo instrument for the first time with an orchesta. The album Immineo was released last June with Eternal Music Group, on the label Sonic Rituals (LA).
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Paris where I’d be happy to welcome my friends. First, we’ll stroll along the banks of the Seine. We’ll cross the Pont Notre Dame to Notre Dame Cathedral on the Ile de la Cité. We’ll have a drink at the bar Le Ju, in one of my favorite neighborhoods: the Marais. A little later, we dine at the Jules Verne restaurant on the second floor of the Tour Effel.
For the night, we have several choices:
Go to the opera at the Palais Garnier in the 9th arrondissement
Watch the sun set over the Sacré Coeur basilica at the top of the Montmartre hill.
Take in a cabaret show in Pigalle’s red-light district
Dance at Silencio, a nightclub dedicated to the arts and festivities
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My inspiration is multi-faceted, drawing on both conventional and unconventional forms. Conventional in the form of authors (my childhood bedside book : Nils Anderson’s Wonderful Journey through Sweden by author Selma Lagerlöf), film directors (Kubrick, Wong Kar-Wai, Xavier Dolan, Terrence Malick…), musicians (Helene Grimaud, Bobby Mc Ferrin, Jordi Savall…), composers (Hildegarde Von Bingen, Arvo Pärt, David Bowie..). Unconventional : strangers I’ve met on a trip, an audience at a concert, nature and the love of my family and friends of course . Everything is a source of inspiration and I am grateful for it.
