We had the good fortune of connecting with Mahdi Taha and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mahdi, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Union, New Jersey, and I come from a humble and modest background that has profoundly shaped who I am today. Growing up in a community where resources were limited, I learned the value of hard work, resilience, and making the most out of every opportunity. My upbringing instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and the drive to succeed—not just for myself, but to uplift those around me.

Seeing my family and neighbors work tirelessly to provide for their loved ones inspired my commitment to perseverance and resourcefulness. This foundation has given me a strong sense of purpose and an appreciation for the journey, no matter how challenging. It’s this perspective that motivates me to contribute meaningfully in everything I do and to remain grounded and determined as I pursue my goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been defined by dedication, resilience, and a deep passion for making a difference in patients’ lives. Today, I am proud to serve as a senior member in one of the largest oncology private practices in the country. This role comes with immense responsibility, but it’s also deeply rewarding to work alongside an incredible team of professionals who share the same commitment to excellence in cancer care.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. It required years of intense study, grueling hours, and overcoming numerous obstacles. From the financial challenges of medical school to the emotional weight of caring for patients in their most vulnerable moments, every step has been a test of endurance and purpose.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is that success in this field isn’t just about knowledge or skill—it’s about empathy, teamwork, and the ability to stay grounded under pressure. The work we do in oncology is often complex and emotionally charged, but it’s also a privilege to be trusted by patients and their families during such critical times.

What sets me apart is my relentless commitment to patient care and my belief in continuous growth, both professionally and personally. Whether it’s staying at the forefront of advancements in oncology or mentoring younger colleagues, I strive to leave a meaningful impact every day.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about my story, it’s that none of this was handed to me. It took years of hard work, the support of incredible mentors and family, and an unwavering belief in the power of perseverance. My journey is a testament to what’s possible when you combine determination with compassion, and I hope it inspires others to pursue their goals with the same passion and resolve.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Miami for a week, I’d create a mix of relaxation, fun, and local flair. We’d start with beach days at South Beach, lunches at Joe’s Stone Crab, and walks along Ocean Drive. A spa day at Carillon Miami Wellness Resort would be perfect for recharging, followed by dinner at Mandolin Aegean Bistro.

We’d explore culture with visits to the Perez Art Museum and Wynwood Walls, and enjoy waterfront dining at Rusty Pelican or Smith & Wollensky. A boat day on Biscayne Bay and a day trip to Key Biscayne for quiet beaches would add variety.

Evenings would feature vibrant Miami nightlife, rooftop cocktails, or live shows. The trip would wrap up with a farewell brunch at Cecconi’s and one last stroll on the beach, soaking in Miami’s unbeatable vibe and sunshine.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to several incredible individuals who have played a pivotal role in my journey and success. First, I want to thank Brian Sheafer, who opened my eyes to the possibility that becoming a doctor was achievable. He was my best friend in high school and was the first person that made me realize that getting good grades and achieving success is actually cool.

I also owe so much to my parents, who worked tirelessly, 365 days a year, to help fund my medical education. Their sacrifices and unwavering support gave me the foundation to pursue my dreams, and I’ll forever be grateful for their love and dedication.

A special thanks goes to Dr. Scott McCann, whose advice and encouragement convinced me to return to oncology fellowship instead of staying in primary care. His guidance shaped not only the trajectory of my career but also my passion for helping those in some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Lastly, I want to recognize Dr. Kenneth Conte, who has been a mentor in every sense of the word—not only in medicine but in life. His wisdom, support, and example have helped me navigate the complexities of both my career and personal growth.

Each of these individuals has been a vital part of my story, and I’m incredibly grateful for the roles they’ve played in shaping who I am today.
