We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Giller Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
The expression “less is more” has had a profound influence on my two chosen careers. Before becoming a professional organizer, I spent 15 years as an art historian and museum curator. During those years I had the pleasure of spending my days writing, reading, and teaching about the artists and architects whose insights defined modern art. One of my favorites was Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, the German architect whose insistence that “less is more” radically transformed our notions of how we live and work in the modern world. When it came time for my own transformation from a curator to a professional organizer, from an employee at a non-profit to a small business owner, I found myself using the phrase again. Naming my company Less is More allowed me to connect a very rewarding part of my past to an exciting, new opportunity. It is amazing how three words about simplicity can hold such a depth of meaning.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Less is More is a professional organizing services company driven by my passion for order and beauty. We offer simple, insightful solutions to complex organizing problems. We understand how to maximize space and have a keen eye for good design. Since founding Less is More in 2010, I have shown thousands of people how less clutter, stress, and discord will lead to more balance, clarity and happiness. The results are dramatic and inspiring.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I continue to be in awe with the beauty of Miami Beach, so it is no surprise that my favorite places to go celebrate the outdoors in some way. South Pointe Park is a must-see destination. I love going there in the afternoon to watch the cruise ships come and go. Riding a bike is definitely the best way to see Miami Beach. PAMM is another favorite spot to be inspired by. Midtown Creamery serves the most incredible ice cream cones. For the best empanadas in town, I head to Charlotte’s Bakery, nestled along a rather seedy block on Washington Ave.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like give a shoutout to my husband, John, who always believes in me, and always knows exactly what to say to calm me down or feel like a million dollars. The success of Less is More has long been a team effort. I continue to be inspired by the brilliant ideas and high standards set by my organizers Catherine Gibel and Joanne Liscano.
