Meet Niurka Betancourt | Tattoo artist, art therapist and professional photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Niurka Betancourt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Niurka, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art has always been my refuge and my way of expressing myself. From tattooing to photography and design, every creative aspect of my life is a means of connecting with people and healing both my soul and theirs. Pursuing an artistic career was a natural decision because I feel that through art, I can convey stories, emotions, and messages that transcend words. It’s my way of contributing something meaningful to the world and leaving a mark on those who trust me to bring their stories to life on their skin or find inspiration in my work. I am convinced that art heals.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is an extension of my soul and my purpose in life. I work primarily as a tattoo artist and photographer, and what sets me apart is the emotional connection I strive to create in every piece. I deeply believe that art heals, and that belief is reflected in my work—whether it’s a tattoo that tells a personal story or a photograph that captures a moment full of meaning. For me, it’s not just about aesthetics but about creating something that deeply resonates with those who receive it.
What makes me most proud is the trust my clients place in me to capture important moments in their lives. I’m also passionate about creating a safe and welcoming space, especially for women, where they can feel heard and valued as their stories are transformed into art.
Five years ago, I decided to reinvent myself and became a tattoo artist. However, art has always been a part of my life, accompanying me and giving me strength in the most challenging moments. This journey hasn’t been easy. Starting over in a new professional direction required effort, sacrifices, and a great deal of determination. One of the most transformative moments was learning to trust myself and my vision, even when the path felt uncertain.
There have been many lessons along the way, but one of the most important is that art is not just a form of expression; it’s a way to connect with people and help heal wounds, even the invisible ones. I’ve also learned that surrounding myself with people who uplift and believe in me is essential for continued growth.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand, Tattoo Ink Therapy Art, is that this is not just a business—it’s my way of giving back to the world. My studio is a space where stories come to life, where art becomes a bridge for healing, and where emotions find a safe place to transform into beauty. My story is marked by resilience, gratitude, and the unwavering belief that art can change lives, including my own.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Florida and I wanted to show them the best of the area, I’d take them on a mix of art, culture, nature, and simple yet delicious food.
We’d start with a visit to Wynwood Walls in Miami, where they could enjoy impressive murals and street art that reflect the city’s vibrant creativity. Then, we’d dive into the history and beauty of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a historic mansion with gardens overlooking Biscayne Bay. For a touch of nature, we’d explore South Pointe Park in Miami Beach, where we’d enjoy beautiful views of the sea and the city, perfect for a relaxing stroll.
As for places to eat, we’d first head to Sergio’s, a local spot with authentic Cuban food that represents a significant part of the city’s culture. Next, we’d enjoy lunch at Greenstreet Café, a Coconut Grove classic known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious variety of dishes. To wrap up the day, we’d try The Tasting Room in Wynwood, a cozy spot perfect for tapas and cocktails.
This itinerary combines art, history, nature, and simple cuisine, showcasing the best of South Florida in a relaxed and accessible way.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my recognition, first and foremost, to my mother, who was one of my greatest sources of inspiration. Her love and strength continue to guide me, even in the most challenging moments. I also want to thank my family and those true friends who have stood by my side unconditionally, supporting me through every stage of my life.
Professionally, my community of clients and followers deserves special recognition. Every person who trusts me to bring their story to life through a tattoo or connect through my art is an essential part of who I am today.
When it comes to books, there are a few that profoundly shaped how I see life and art. Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl taught me the importance of finding purpose even in pain, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert inspired me to embrace creativity with courage, and The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron helped me reconnect with my creative spirit and see art as a journey of healing and self-discovery. Lastly, I want to acknowledge the artists and mentors who, through their work, showed me that art has the power to heal and transform. Each of them, in their own way, has left an indelible mark on my story.
