We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Garvin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Motherhood has definitely changed the dynamics of running a business over the years, but I’ve found a balance that works for me. Most mornings I wake up early so I can have dedicated writing time. I’ve also prioritized outsourcing some of the admin tasks and things I thought were taking away from the limited time I have to focus on writing the next book!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write a variety of romantic comedies! I’m a big fan of characters exchanging banter back and forth, so that’s something I really focus on with my books. Nothing beats those witty one-liners from characters who feel like people you’d want to hang out with in real life.

I’ve learned (and am still learning) the importance of putting myself out there more. As an author, it’s easy to want to hide behind the pages, but it can be a limiting approach. Plus, it’s more fun to connect with people in an authentic way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great bookstores to check out in the area! Spellbound Bookstore, Novel Tea, and The New Romantics are just a few of the incredible indie stores in the area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out Spellbound Bookstore in Sanford Florida. This store has spearheaded so many wonderful community events, and they were my first in person book signing. I am forever grateful they gave me a chance!
