We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I came to Intimacy Direction/Choreography from the dance world. I have been working as a choreographer for theatre since 2010 (I started in then in Philadelphia). I LOVE physical story-telling, whether it’s in dance or theatre. In 2018, I was researching how to address intimate moments onstage, and learned about the field of intimacy direction, and jumped in! It’s been a challenge- with the training required, explaining to people what I do, and why it’s important, and now, with COVID, translating my stage skills to virtual ones, and finding work. But it’s also been so rewarding and exciting! Learning about Intimacy Direction changed how I do almost everything- view TV/movies, how I teach dance and theatre, my awareness of power dynamics at play in the world. I, as an artist, work in a consent-based, collaborative creative practice, with a focus on the meaning-making available in movement. As the founder of Momentum Stage, it is important to me that foundational work in consent, power dynamics, boundaries, and teaching with touch be available to performers in dance and theatre, as well as those who teach dance and theatre.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Assuming this a post-COVID trip! I love living in South Florida, because of the weather. So, the beach would be high on my list. Since I moved here in 2012, The Corner has been one of my favorite bars. I don’t go often, but the drinks are excellent and I love the vintage vibe. Speaking of vintage, we’d set an appointment with L.A. Boudoir to see her vintage apparel and accessories. Walking around Coconut Grove and/or Coral Gables is always fun for window shopping or grabbing a coffee. I’m a vegetarian, and Miami has a lot of options for vegetarians and vegans, but my favorite place for vegan food is Green Bar in Fort Lauderdale. I also love Marumi Sushi’s (on Sunrise in Plantation) veggie options. It’s probably my favorite restuarant of all time. I live near Sawgrass Mills, so I’m sure we’d end up there for shopping, after grabbing coffee at Ella Cafe in Plantation.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To Dan Granke, my mentor. Dan is on the Creative Team of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, and has been an important resource and advocate in my training and work as an Intimacy Director.
