We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Up until becoming a business owner, I actually never considered myself a risk taker. I was very much risk-adverse. But I spent most of my 20’s feeling like I was living an average life – I had stable employment, a supportive family, and so many blessings, but I was missing a deeper connection to my work and never felt totally lit up or inspired by what I was doing.

Then, one day, I found myself at a job that definitely wasn’t right for me. But I constantly ignored the red flags, telling myself that “that’s just part of having a job”, and continued to live a life that never really felt like mine, until one day I was left with no choice.

An incident at work showed me that I had two choices: Continue to live a life playing by someone else’s rules, or, for once, bet on myself and see if I can walk a new path.

I left that job with nothing else lined up. I started my business and started taking on clients, with no clear goal or direction at the beginning. But 2.5 years later, when I look back at that risk, it was the moment that changed everything for me.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m a Personal Branding & Public Relations Expert that shows entrepreneurs how they can use PR to grow their visibility and authority. I LOVE my work, and it feels as though I am serving my clients with my gifts every single day.

My business didn’t always function as this, however, initially my company was a traditional marketing agency. After I left my corporate career, I scaled my agency to six figures in its first year of business, and doubled that in year #2, but I still wasn’t totally lit up by the work I was doing. I started growing the coaching side of my business while still running my agency, and I found that being able to empower my clients with their own personal branding & PR skill really was where my heart felt most fulfilled.

Now? I’ve closed down the agency side of my business, and have gone all-in on developing programs, courses, and experiences where business owners can learn from me directly.

The biggest lesson I learned through the many seasons and transitions of my business? If you focus on the work you LOVE doing, you will generate far more money, energy and opportunity than if you focus on growing a business that you think you “should” be running. You need to trust that you’ve been put on this planet to share your own unique gifts, and if you can harness those gifts into a business that brings transformation to others, you WILL be successful. You just have to trust that it’s possible and take it seriously – invest in support, mentorship and resources to help you overcome your blocks. Because for most of us, we let ourselves get in our own way without ever really noticing it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE Miami, and although I’m not a local, I have the opportunity to visit often, and I’ve met some amazing friends and colleagues in the city.

For me, I’m all about growing a network of likeminded entrepreneurial women, and I absolutely love going to the events and dinners run by Les Femmes Social Club. The founder, Hind, is always picking amazing new spots to enjoy an evening out with new friends. The last time I was in town, we went to Pasta e Basta in Wynwood. The vibes were cozy (even on the outdoor patio), and the house-made pasta was to die for. The best part? We all left with some new friends.

I’m also a big beach girl, so I MUST always tell my friends to work a little Vitamin Sea into their day. I highly recommend doing a beach walk in the morning (I love to grab an iced vanilla latte from Shepherd Artisan Coffee in Miami Beach along the way); and there’s nothing like taking a moment to sit in the sand and journal. You’ll also find free sunrise and sunset yoga classes near the 3rd Street lifeguard tower, which is the perfect way to start OR end a day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my partner Gabriel, who really is the unsung hero in my entrepreneurial journey (in addition to being the love of my life).

I always admired Gabriel for being able to stay true to himself and his values, and he was the one that recognized the entrepreneurial spirit in me long before I ever did. He noticed the frustrations I had with my corporate career, and knew I could do so much more for myself, so before I was even ready to leave my job, he started planting the seeds of what my own business “could” look like.

It was those conversations with him that gave me the confidence to leave my decade-long corporate career and take that risk. I mean, we had only closed on our new mortgage together just 3 months before I decided to quit, but he didn’t even flinch. He knew just how capable I was of building an empire of my own, and he continues to be one of my biggest cheerleaders and sounding boards to this day.
