Meet Julie Hill | Hairstylist & Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The success of my brand comes down to two key factors. First, my deep education in the field and a constant commitment to growth. I strive every single day to sharpen my skills and stay at the top of my craft, not just for the integrity of my brand, but to offer the highest level of service to my clients.
Second—and just as important—is the genuine care I bring to every interaction. I always aim to be kind, present, and focused on my clients’ needs. I want them to feel their best, look their best, and experience a sense of calm—especially on what can often be a stressful day. As an artist, it’s easy to get caught up in your own creative vision, but I remind myself constantly: this isn’t about me. It’s about bringing their vision to life. That balance of skill and sincerity has been the foundation of my brand’s success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art takes many forms—hair, makeup, and beyond. It’s not just about styling; sometimes it’s about crafting an entire vision. Whether it’s creating a unique headpiece or designing a photoshoot that’s been playing in my mind, I love pushing my creativity to its limits. Right now, I’m working on a bejeweled mannequin that will one day have a purpose of its own. While my job as a hairstylist is inherently creative, I need that space to let my artistic side run wild. It helps calm my mind, keep me grounded, and fill my creative bank so I can give more of myself to my work and clients.
I’ve always been this way. My brain is full of ideas, and I’ve learned that the best thing I can do is set it free. It brings me joy and makes me feel truly alive. As much as I love my career, it hasn’t always been easy. Getting to where I am today and where I plan to go in the future has been the result of hard work, perseverance, and a lot of self-reflection.
There have been plenty of moments in my career when doubt crept in—questioning if I’m good enough, if I’m failing, or why my schedule isn’t as full as I’d like it to be. Those moments of insecurity have been tough to work through, but I’ve learned to counter them by taking action. I throw myself into creativity, using it as a tool to reclaim my confidence and passion. When I fill my creative tank, I become better at what I do, and it reminds me why I’m in this field.
I’m grateful to have a career where I can channel my creativity into everything I do—it’s what keeps me motivated, focused, and inspired every single day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A Place That Fuels My Creativity – The Design District, Miami:
I was first introduced to the Miami Design District while traveling there for a photoshoot, and I was instantly captivated. What I thought would be just another location quickly became one of my favorite places. I was so pleasantly surprised by the explosion of beauty, color, and art around every corner. It felt like a magical introduction to a world where creativity lives in the streets.
What inspires me most about the Design District is the rawness of its creativity. From bold public art installations to fashion-forward window displays, every block feels like a curated gallery—yet completely free and unrestrained. There’s something so energizing about being surrounded by art that isn’t confined to a canvas or a studio. It reminds me that creativity has no rules or boundaries.
As a hairstylist and artist, I pull inspiration from everywhere, and the Design District is a space that fills my creative cup. Whether it’s the texture of a mural, the unexpected color pairings, or the way architecture plays with light, I always leave feeling recharged and ready to bring new ideas into my work. It’s a place where imagination feels endless—and for someone like me, that’s everything.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the most defining moments in my career as a hairstylist was attending Bumble and bumble University in New York, where I had the privilege of learning from some of the industry’s best. A standout experience was being invited to a masterclass led by Howard McLaren, the founder of Bumble and bumble.
There’s something powerful about learning from someone at the top of their game—especially when they’re willing to give honest, unfiltered feedback. Howard didn’t sugarcoat anything, but what made it impactful was that his critique always came with clear direction. It was a humbling experience, realizing how much I still had to grow, but it also fueled a new level of drive in me.
What I learned then—and still hold onto now—is that education only transforms you when you apply it, especially in the moments that feel uncomfortable or uncertain. That mindset of taking action, even when it’s scary, has been key to becoming the stylist I am today.
