Meet Tamela Gordon | Author and Acquisitions Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamela Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamela, what role has risk played in your life or career?
The most significant personal risk I’ve ever taken was relocating to Miami from New York with the hopes of improving my mental and physical health. There were so many who thought that I should stay in New York City, but Miami called to me! I ultimately listened to that inner voice, which led me to an adorably cozy studio in Little Havana. During my time there, I found a therapist I could afford, underwent major dental work, learned how to cook, and had experiences that ultimately led to my first book deal.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The greatest lesson I’ve learned as a writer, especially since getting signed and published, is the importance of defining success beyond what the publishing industry standard suggests. The finishing line has a lot more to offer than guest spots on morning shows and a spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list. The accurate measure of success for a writer is to be read; that’s the actual award. And that’s the kind of thing that only comes with consistency and good writing. And so, instead of trying to be seen, I focus on my book’s readers, which has grown considerably over the past year.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I hosted the retreat at Casa de Tami, Miami was always the central star of the guests’ stay, so this question isn’t just hypothetical for me lol. We always began our adventure in Little Havana, where guests could experience authentic Cuban American culture. Get some cafecito, stroll down Calle Ocho, and get a bite at El Pub in between shopping. Next, I’d take them to Midtown, where we’d go for happy hour at Sugar Cane. And, of course, a beach day in South Beach is a must.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to Shoutout Miami’s very own Books & Books. Every location is a gem, but their Coral Gables location has my heart. The entire staff is phenomenal, and they went above and beyond their way to ensure that my book signing was a success. They’re also exceptional advocates for literacy activism and support their local community in numerous ways. Thank you for all you do, Books & Books!!!
