We had the good fortune of connecting with Sevyn Love and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sevyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always had a passion for cooking; however, I never had aspirations of being a chef. Growing up, I would assist with preparing dinner and cooking on holidays. As a teen, I would cook for friends and invite them over for any reason.

My brother Jordan often told me I didn’t cook like a normal person and that I should pursue it as a career. Back then, I thought the idea of being a chef was lame. My business was originally supposed to be a clothing line. It wasn’t until after the passing of my brother that I finally had the motivation to start my business.

I fell into a depression for six months after his departure, the only thing I wanted to do was get to the bag. During that period, I started doing fraud. Fast forward two years later: I had caught my first two cases, and I didn’t want that to be my reality. I had two choices either go back to working at Chrysler (an assembly plant in Detroit) or get serious about becoming a chef.

On September 26, 2016, I took a leap of faith and launched my business, 7Figure Gourmet Cuisine. I hosted a pop-up shop in Detroit and sold out in two hours. Motivated by the success, I decided to continue the pop-up for two more days, selling out both days. At that moment, I knew I had a gift and that this was my calling.

I started my business out of survival. I knew working a 9-to-5 wasn’t my reality, nor did I want to live a life of crime. It was all or nothing for me. Full of uncertainty and doubt, I entrusted in the Lord and have been diligent in trusting the process and following Gods plan.

This is God’s plan it’s never been mine.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve faced many setbacks and triumphs as a young Black business owner. Being a felon doesn’t make it easier; however, I don’t let that define me or deter me from accomplishing my goals. What sets me apart from others is my relentlessness, my drive, and my hustle.

It hasn’t been an easy journey, there have been countless times I felt unmotivated. I always tell myself, “What comes easy doesn’t last long.” I believe every business owner faces adversity. Struggle is inevitable. It isn’t an easy road to success, no matter how glamorous it may look from the outside looking in. There will be sleepless nights. You’ll feel unappreciated and devalued. However, always remember it’s only temporary. The reactions I get and the smiles on my clients faces keep me going. Knowing that people reach out to me to celebrate monumental moments in their lives is one of the most rewarding things to me.

I’ve been blessed to travel the world, sharing my gifts and talents. Since relocating to Miami, I’ve been greeted with open arms and I love that I bring something new and different to such a vibrant city.

I’ve learned countless lessons along the way. The most important one is to move on your own accord. Don’t let anyone push you to do things prematurely. Trust in yourself, and trust the process. Everything happens in divine order, stay diligent, stay focused, and practice discipline.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to come and visit for a week, I would take them to the Art District to do some shopping and grab a bite to eat. I don’t frequently go to South Beach, but we’d have to do a night at Playa. I also love the pizza at Smoking Pie, which is around the corner from Playa.

We’ll do a beach day at Nikki Beach. I love the East Hotel, so I’d encourage them to spend a few nights there to take in the scenery off Brickell and do more shopping and eating. You can’t do Miami without hitting 24K and leaving when the sun’s rising.

On a more chill day, I’ll take them up to Sunny Isles to grab oysters and drinks from Upper Deck. There’s so much to do here in Miami, and I don’t wanna give up all my spots, so that’s all you get for now.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shoutout to my late brother Jordan for planting the seed that inspired me to pursue a career as a chef. I also want to recognize my mom for continuing to water that seed and always supporting and motivating me to follow my dreams, no matter the hardships I’ve faced along the way.
