We had the good fortune of connecting with Tannu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tannu, what Inspired Your Journey into Cybersecurity?
My fascination with computers started in the 90s, driven by a simple curiosity about how they worked. The internet was in its infancy, and with slow dial-up connections, it wasn’t much to look at, but it was enough to spark my interest and keep me up late, exploring its mysteries. Back then, I was diving into Information Technology and computers, but I never imagined I’d end up in cybersecurity. I started out in data analysis, not knowing where it would take me, but somehow, over time, I found myself in the security space, no grand plans, just taking things as they came.

In school, I never would have predicted where I’d be today. I was just another girl staring at a screen, wondering, “What is cybersecurity?” and figuring it out as I went along. Looking back, the lesson I’ve learned is simple: put in the hard work, and it’s possible!

What has truly inspired me on this journey are the women in the field and their allies, those who believed in me, gave me platforms, and continued doing their best to support me. Their encouragement and determination have been a constant source of motivation, and in turn, they’ve inspired me to lift others as I climb.

Those early experiences were pivotal in shaping my career. What began as a simple curiosity about how computers worked evolved into a deep passion for understanding and securing systems. It laid the foundation for my journey into cybersecurity, a field I’m proud to be part of today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been shaped by persistence, continuous learning, and the willingness to seize every opportunity that came my way. I started out in data analysis, never imagining that I’d find myself in cybersecurity. However, as my path unfolded at Microsoft, I quickly immersed myself in the world of security. One of my proudest accomplishments has been leading efforts to detect and mitigate threats targeting systems. This work has a real impact on people’s lives, from preventing credit card theft to halting email account hacks. A defining moment in my career was leading real-time responses to various cyberattacks, empowering my team of engineers to secure our systems in the midst of crisis. Every time a security breach is thwarted, there are countless professionals behind the scenes, working tirelessly to reduce attack surfaces and protect our digital world.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend deep technical expertise with a passion for fostering inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. Tackling complex security challenges excites me, but what truly drives me is the opportunity to give back to the community. Whether it’s mentoring women in cybersecurity, amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups, or leading programs like the Women in security at Microsoft, my goal is to make cybersecurity a field where anyone regardless of background can succeed.

The road hasn’t always been easy. Working in a cyber security industry presented its own set of challenges, and like many others, I’ve faced imposter syndrome. But through resilience and a commitment to learning, I’ve been able to push through those obstacles. I’ve learned that hard work is essential, but so is leaning on mentors, staying open to feedback, and embracing the idea of failing forward. This mindset is exactly why I prioritized joining the Microsoft Women in Security as Co-Chair. It’s an opportunity for me to be part of a community that supports and empowers women in cybersecurity, creating the same opportunities and support that helped me get to where I am today.

I want the world to know that success in cybersecurity, or any field, is built on consistent effort, self-belief, and the support of a community. My journey may not have been a straight line, but it’s been one of embracing opportunities, lifting others as I rise, and constantly striving to learn and grow.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Miami, I’d want to make sure they experienced both the excitement and tranquility the city offers. My first job started in Miami, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. There are two spots in particular that I absolutely love.

The first is Wynwood Walls, which offers a vibrant display of street art. The murals tell the story of Miami’s creativity, and the energy in the neighborhood is contagious. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the artistic side of the city, and it’s hard not to be inspired by the atmosphere there. After checking out the art, we’d grab a coffee at Panther Coffee and enjoy the surroundings.

The second spot I can’t get enough of is Biscayne National Park, specifically the Biscayne Lighthouse. On the way to the lighthouse, there’s a peaceful little beach where we can stop, relax, and take in the natural beauty of the area. In my opinion, this beach has the best view of the city, offering a calm, reflective moment amidst all the excitement Miami has to offer. It’s the perfect contrast to the hustle of city life quiet, serene, and a place to reconnect with nature. I love this spot because it provides the best of both worlds: stunning views and the perfect escape from the fast pace of the city.

Miami is a place where you can balance everything: art, culture, beautiful nature, and, of course, the beach. It’s those contrasts that make this city so special to me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to the incredible women in cybersecurity and their allies who have supported and mentored me throughout my journey. There are many individuals and organizations that deserve recognition. I also want to thank the mentors who believed in me when I was just starting out, giving me opportunities, guidance, and confidence to push forward. Special thanks to the women who continuously advocate for others and create spaces where we can all thrive. Their unwavering commitment to lifting others is the reason I keep showing up and doing the work I do today.

I also want to shoutout Atomic Habits by James Clear. The principles in this book have truly transformed my approach to personal and professional growth. It’s a powerful reminder that small, consistent actions, no matter where you are in your career compound over time and can lead to significant progress. Those habits, whether in cybersecurity or everyday life, have shaped my success and continue to push me forward.
