Meet Julia Johnston | Model & Confidence Advocate

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Johnston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking has always been an essential part of my growth. I think that in order to grow, and eventually succeed, you have to be willing to fail. I would say that I have experienced failure more often than I have achieved success, but to me this is a win- it is a refinement process. I welcome taking risks with open arms, because the thought of staying stagnant scares me more. The faster you learn how to fail and start again, the faster you will succeed.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started off as a theatre kid, and eventually studied acting both at Playhouse West in Los Angeles, as well as Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. I studied art history and film theory in College as well, which only lit the fire in my heart for all art forms. Upon moving to Los Angeles, I found myself in the music industry, getting signed to a record deal about a year after seriously making and releasing music, which was wild for me because I started just with my laptop in my closet with no prior experience. I later parted ways with my label, moving to Medellin, Colombia to work with J. Balvin’s dad, and afterwards to London, where I lived and performed as a singer for 3 years. Now, I have found artistic expression in competing in National Beauty Pageants, where I am able to mix my love of fashion, modeling, public speaking, community service and female empowerment.
Being a signer professionally was extremely difficult on my mental health, which is why I chose to leave the music industry. However, I gained so much from that time in my life, as well as life experience that, to me, it was a success. I learned that it is essential to follow the calling God places on your heart and take the risk, no matter where you land. It is equally important to take care of yourself spiritually, emotionally and physically- that is something I wish I had known back then.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooo!
Well my family is from South Miami, and I live in Brickell so I would definitely split the daytime between activities. I would say we would need to spend one day at Vizcaya or exploring some of the trails around the Fairchild gardens in South Miami, coffee at Mamans, and then happy hour at Rosa Sky, Sexy Fish or Moxie’s- just so she could completely enjoy the Brickell scene and the madness! Maybe Sugar after just for the roof top or Gekkos for the scene. Taking her to my gym BOXR would also be a great experience for her, it’s an amazing gym and a great place for boxing, which I am passionate about!
On a Sunday definitely I would invite her to church at my church VOUS, followed by matcha and Miami Beach, and ending with the sunset at South Pointe! Sunday night at South Pointe is essential!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother Josephine, who was my example of grace, femininity and strength growing up.
