We had the good fortune of connecting with GIANNI MENDES TONIUTTI and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi GIANNI, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I helped found Tosolini, Toniutti & Partners, the idea was never simply to create another law firm. The vision was to build a bridge between two legal systems, two business cultures, and two continents.

As an Italian-trained lawyer who later earned an LL.M. in the United States and built my career in New York, I experienced firsthand how difficult it can be for entrepreneurs, investors, professionals, artists, and multinational companies to navigate legal issues that cross borders. Too often, clients were forced to coordinate multiple lawyers in different countries, each seeing only part of the picture.

I saw an opportunity to create something different: a firm capable of providing truly integrated legal services to clients operating between Europe and the United States. Together with my partners, we built Tosolini, Toniutti & Partners around that concept. Our goal was to combine American efficiency and business-oriented legal strategy with a deep understanding of European and Italian legal culture.

My own practice in immigration law reinforced this vision. I was working with investors launching businesses in the United States, multinational companies transferring executives across borders, and internationally recognized artists, athletes, fashion professionals, and entrepreneurs pursuing opportunities in America. These clients did not just need immigration counsel; they often needed guidance on corporate structures, real estate investments, litigation risks, tax considerations, and cross-border business strategy.

That realization shaped the firm’s growth. We expanded beyond immigration and developed a multidisciplinary international practice capable of assisting clients throughout their entire journey, whether they were investing, relocating, expanding a business, protecting assets, or building a global presence.

What motivated me most was the opportunity to create an institution rather than simply maintain a legal practice. Nearly twenty years later, I remain proud that we have built a firm with offices in both the United States and Italy, serving everyone from multinational corporations to extraordinary individuals in the arts, sports, fashion, and business sectors. The most rewarding part has been helping clients transform international opportunities into reality while having a trusted legal team that understands both sides of the Atlantic.

At its core, the decision to start the firm was driven by a simple belief: in an increasingly global world, legal services should not stop at national borders.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Before I answer that question, it is important to understand that my professional journey has never been confined to a single discipline. While I am best known as an international attorney and founding partner of Tosolini, Toniutti & Partners, I have also cultivated a parallel career as a musician, singer, songwriter, and performer. At first glance, law and music may seem like completely different worlds, but for me they have always been deeply connected. Both require creativity, discipline, communication, and the ability to connect with people on a meaningful level. Throughout my life, I have embraced both paths, allowing each to enrich the other and shape the person I am today. Understanding this dual identity provides important context for my story, because many of the values that have guided my success as a lawyer—resilience, passion, authenticity, and innovation—were equally forged through my experiences as an artist.

As a result, when people ask me about my art, they often expect me to talk about music. Music has certainly been one of the great passions of my life. I started playing guitar at a young age and grew up surrounded by artists and musicians. Over the years, I pursued music seriously as a singer, songwriter, and performer, and it remains an important part of who I am. But if I am being honest, I see creativity as something much broader than music alone.

My real art is building connections between people, cultures, and opportunities.

As a founding partner of Tosolini, Toniutti & Partners, I have spent my career helping entrepreneurs, investors, multinational companies, artists, athletes, entertainers, and professionals navigate the complex intersection of different legal systems and business cultures. My work often involves helping people turn ambitious dreams into reality—whether that means launching a business in the United States, obtaining an extraordinary ability visa, expanding internationally, or pursuing opportunities that can change the course of their lives.

What sets me apart is that I have never viewed law as merely a technical profession. I have always approached it with the mindset of an entrepreneur and an artist. The same creativity that allows someone to write a song or perform on stage can also be applied to solving legal problems, building a business, or creating opportunities where others see obstacles.

My journey certainly was not easy. I was born in Brazil, raised in Italy, educated in Europe, and later moved to the United States to continue my legal education and build my career. Along the way, I had to adapt to different languages, cultures, legal systems, and business environments. I earned my law degree in Italy, completed an LL.M. in the United States, and ultimately built a transatlantic legal practice serving clients on both sides of the ocean.

There were many challenges. Building an international law firm from the ground up required vision, persistence, and a willingness to take risks. There were moments when success was far from guaranteed. Like many entrepreneurs, I faced uncertainty, setbacks, and difficult decisions. What allowed me to overcome those challenges was resilience and the belief that every obstacle contains an opportunity to learn and grow.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that people should never feel forced to choose between their passions. Society often tells us that we must fit into a single category. I have never accepted that idea. I am a lawyer, an entrepreneur, a musician, and a lifelong student of different cultures. Rather than competing with one another, those different passions have strengthened each other. My artistic background helps me connect with clients and understand creative professionals. My legal career provides structure and discipline to my entrepreneurial and artistic pursuits. Music teaches empathy, and law teaches strategy.

What I want people to know about my story is that success does not come from following a conventional path. It comes from embracing who you are, pursuing excellence relentlessly, and having the courage to build a life that reflects all of your passions rather than just one of them.

If there is a common thread running through everything I do—whether in a courtroom, a boardroom, or on a stage—it is the desire to create opportunities, inspire confidence, and help people realize possibilities they may not have thought were within reach.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If one of my closest friends were visiting Miami for a week, I would want to show them the side of the city that goes beyond the postcards and tourist attractions. Miami is often associated with beaches and nightlife, but what truly makes it special is its unique blend of international culture, world-class cuisine, art, architecture, and entrepreneurial energy. The perfect Miami experience is sophisticated, vibrant, and effortlessly cosmopolitan.

We would start our mornings with waterfront walks through South of Fifth and South Pointe Park, followed by breakfast at one of the city’s elegant cafés overlooking Biscayne Bay. From there, I would introduce them to some of Miami’s most iconic neighborhoods, including Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, the Design District, and Wynwood.

No visit would be complete without spending time on the water. A yacht excursion through Biscayne Bay, Star Island, Fisher Island, and the Venetian Islands offers one of the most beautiful perspectives of the city. Miami is at its best when experienced from the water.

For culture and architecture, I would take them to the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and the Design District, which combines luxury, art, fashion, and architecture unlike anywhere else in the United States.

As for dining, Miami has become one of the world’s great culinary destinations. A few of my favorite stops would include:

• **MILA** – one of the city’s most beautiful dining experiences, blending Mediterranean and Japanese influences with a stunning rooftop atmosphere in Miami Beach.

• **Casa Neos** – an exceptional waterfront destination where luxury, wellness, gastronomy, and hospitality come together in a uniquely Miami setting.

• **Cipriani Miami** – a timeless classic. The service, elegance, and waterfront views make it one of the finest places in the city for a sophisticated lunch or dinner.

• **Bagatelle Miami** – vibrant, energetic, and unmistakably glamorous. It perfectly captures the celebratory spirit that has become synonymous with Miami’s international social scene.

Beyond those favorites, I would also include Carbone, Cote Miami, and Makoto for an unforgettable culinary tour of the city.

Evenings would be spent enjoying Miami’s elegant social scene rather than traditional nightlife. Sunset cocktails overlooking Biscayne Bay, dinners that last for hours, and conversations with entrepreneurs, artists, investors, and creatives from around the world are what make Miami so fascinating. One of the city’s greatest strengths is that it attracts ambitious and interesting people from every corner of the globe.

Toward the end of the week, I would take them to Coconut Grove, which remains one of my favorite neighborhoods. It offers a more relaxed and authentic side of Miami, with beautiful waterfront views, historic charm, and a lifestyle that feels both sophisticated and effortless.

What I love most about Miami is that it constantly reinvents itself. It is one of the few places where you can have breakfast with a tech founder, lunch with an artist, dinner with an international investor, and end the evening listening to world-class music—all within a few miles of each other. It is a city built on possibility, diversity, and optimism, which is why I continue to find it such an inspiring place to live and work.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I had to dedicate my shoutout to someone, it would actually be a combination of people rather than a single individual.

First and foremost, my family. As an immigrant, entrepreneur, and lawyer building a practice between two countries, there were many moments when the path was uncertain. The support, encouragement, and sacrifices of my family gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that at times seemed far beyond my reach. They taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of honoring your commitments—qualities that have guided me throughout my career.

I would also recognize my partners and colleagues at Tosolini, Toniutti & Partners. Building an international law firm is not an individual achievement. It requires shared vision, trust, and countless hours of collaboration. What we have built over the years is the result of talented professionals working together toward a common goal: helping clients successfully navigate an increasingly global world.

Finally, I would like to recognize my clients. That may sound unusual, but many of them took a chance on me and on our firm when we were still growing. Over the years, I have had the privilege of representing entrepreneurs, investors, artists, athletes, executives, and families pursuing their dreams across borders. Their stories, ambitions, and trust have challenged me to become a better lawyer and a better person. In many ways, they have been some of my greatest teachers.

If there is one lesson I have learned, it is that success is never a solo journey. Every meaningful achievement in my life has been built on relationships—with family, partners, mentors, colleagues, and clients. I am grateful to all of them for helping shape the person and lawyer I am today.
