Meet Eva & Pepe: Dutch Hippies

Dutch Hippies is a band. We started performing together in 1998, when we met at the jamsessions at the Korte Golf in Amsterdam. We started out as a rockband called EveNi, which had a great run of success in Amsterdam and around the country, performing venues as Paradiso and the Melkweg regularly, doing several tv and radio performances over the years, national and international shows, got signed in NYC in 2001 by Clay Sheff from Smash Studios, who spotted our talents from a young age. Also winning the “Amsterdamse Pop Prijs in 2003”, which was cool to. We moved to NYC in 2007, with just 2 bags and 2 guitars and living in a hostel for weeks. NYC was such an inspiration and energy boost for us that we rapidly developed a great and unique sound and performed in classic venues like the Mercury Lounge, the Bitter End, Sullivan Hall, Webster Hall, did several mini tours to different states and were involved with several large recordlabels. We have highlight memories like a sold out High Line Ballroom in Manhattan in 2009, blowing the roof of so many legendary venues including a unique the Brooklyn Museum, where we did a show for the Dutch-Manhattan connection 400 anniversary, Central Park, Webster Hall, Thompson Square Park and a long list of many more. We must have played hundreds and hundreds of shows in all these years lol! We then moved to Miami by the end of 2012 and our adventure in Wynwood continued with more art and shows and started our family with the birth of our daughter Beau Lilou. The greatest experience of all is the connection we were able to have with the fans and to have a clear vision and realization why you do what you do. The impact that music and art can have on people is so profound that you can experience a great flow of gratitude in your heart as an artist that goes beyond. Even if you’ve experienced all the intense moments of despair and challenges that you went through that seemed impossible for you to conquer, you’re able to channel and transmute those emotions and experiences into a piece of art or music that can bring joy and serve many other people in different ways. The power is in the paradox, where your story, and experiences, negative or postive, go hand in hand with the creating of the art or music. Very Ying Yang haha. We like to follow our highest excitement and have no expectation of the outcome, but we know secretly it’s going to be awesome when you have a good time. Since 2014 we are known as Dutch Hippies and our music and art continued to expand in Wynwood, where we were part of an historical and highly creative era of the rise and shine of the neighborhood. We were known for all our different expressions. With live performances and art exhibitions at at the Wynwood Shop, Panther Coffee, Gallery 212, the Lab and many other galleries and pop ups. Collaborations with all different types of artists and creative companies. We also built a tiny house in a full size 37ft schoolbus and started living in it, which lead us to amazing people, experiences and places. I wasn’t an easy path to choose ,but it was the one that made the most sense… We’re still living it today! In 2016 our second daughter Lotus Lily was born. At that time we were parked and living with our friends Tony and Cuci of Afrobeta, who are an amazing band btw and amazing humans. In 2017 we finally fulfilled a lifetime dream to travel with the magic bus through the USA to reach our destination of California. We had a beautiful journey going from Miami , Gainesville, New Orleans, Austin, San Antonio, LA, Ojai, Reno, Guerneville,, SanFrancisco to our final destination of Mt.Shasta, Oregon. With the whole family we drove cross the country and waking up in a different place everyday was like fairytale for the kids. We’ve driven more than 10k miles and we’ve also been stranded with the bus several times and experienced some scary moments to…. the trip itself is worth a movie haha. One day the kids started to talk about missing their friends in Miami and we started to miss everyone as well, then Pepe had a dream about it and everything pointed in the direction of going back to our hometown and communities in Miami. And we left Mt.Shasta. Coming back after 6 month of traveling was an amazing feeling and we felt great about it the choice to come back right in time for Artbasel 2017. We were able to really appreciate Miami for the amazing and magical city that it truly is. The Miami Vibe is it’s own thing in the US, the communities are strong and full of love, we can promise you that after all our travels. After returning, through friends and community and the attention of our concept of the Hippiebots, we developed a great relation with the best night club in South Beach called “Do Not Sit On The Furniture” from the owner, internationally known DJ Behrouz and his wife Megan. This is where Dutch Hippies hold a weekly residency with their art, music, merch and fashion up to present day. It’s an amazing place to dance to high quality music and dj’s, meet new people, relax and chill in a great atmosphere, taking you to new dimensions and out of daily life for that moment in time, which feels right at home for us as Dutch Hippies. A place where communities are born and friendships begin. In 2019 we were delighted with the news that we were having a third baby and this time it was a boy. Zen Atreyu was born on January 21st 2020. Then on February 21st something happened that is our worst experience in life ever, which is the sudden passing of our son. He was exactly one month when he died of an hemorrhage, It devastated and broke us and we don’t think that that feeling of loss will ever change. Instead we embrace our emotions and sadness as much as we can by talking about him, singing for him, write songs about our traumatic experiences and thinking about him daily. For us as a family it’s been a very challenging and rough year to say the least, but we are full of energy to create a beautiful life for our girls, who deserve the best. But it wasn’t only bad….A beautiful thing happened which is that we are expecting a new baby, which will be born in April. And it’s a boy! This made our vision for 2021 really bright and we have many new projects coming ahead. We are working a a special collection of silver and copper rings in honor of our son Zen Atreyu, in collaboration with one best friends, master ringmaker Pitango, insta: @pitangorings . We are super excited about releasing the highly anticipated Dutch Hippies album called “Enter The Vortex” in 2021 , which we have worked on for the last 4 years, with a collection of 13 unique songs. We are working with great experts in their field like producer Brian Cid to reach the best mastering soundquality and Pablo Delcan for design and artwork to create a timeless and beautiful music album and artistic statement. We are blessed and honored to work with an amazing team of people and we’re pumped for the end product. Also expect a feature of Dutch Hippies on a new song of amazing friend and artist “NVDES” soon to come this year…. We’ve already been working on the recordings for the next EP called “Songs for Zen”, which will be released, end of 2021, if all goes by plan, This EP will be a full collaboration of “the Dutch Hippies Family” with songs also written and performed by Beau Lilou and Lotus Lily. It will be a very emotional album that will hopefully help us heal as as a family as well as many other people going through similar experiences. We are ready for 2021!!!

The first thing to check out when you come to Miami is nightclub Do Not Sit On The Furniture”, dance your butt off and visit the Dutch Hippies and their Pop up which will give anyone an authentic Miami experience, without a doubt. Wynwood is a place you must visit during the day and get ice cream from all vegan Nabati Icecream or Cielito Icepops. Both have the most amazing product in their own style. Also fantastic stores like the Wynwood Shop you should not miss to visit with all unique art and jewelry. And Panther coffee is excellent and legendary.
