We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Bourget and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want to be remembered for capturing and producing amazing music. I also hope to invent some new techniques along the way.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am unofficially a wizard of the sonic arts. So basically, I try to translate what artists have in their brain, into a song you can hear on the radio or streaming service. As an audio engineer and producer, I am always trying to capture the best tones, and get the best performances out of my artists. One thing I don’t do is “good enough”. That is actually one of the main reasons (even though I don’t have a website) I am able to work with a bunch of people throughout the year. Working in music is no easy undertaking by any means, it requires a lot of hard work, time, time, time, and sacrifice. Over the years I have learned to trust my instincts, and to go with feeling rather than strictly logic. There are no hard rules in music, so you gotta go with the flow, and serve the song as best you can. I want to impart people with this little nugget: find what you love to do, eat, breathe, sleep it. You will eventually love what you do, and get paid to do it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, since I live on the west coast, that’s an easy one. Beach, burrito, repeat. I’d also take them to some shows if the world wasn’t shut down.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All the artists that gave me a chance when I was just a budding engineer.
