Meet Marvens Jean-Baptiste: Scriptwriter. Director. Business owner. Future Pirate King.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marvens Jean-Baptiste and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marvens, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
To be honest it started with one of my friends who’s an artist named King Hoodie. He told me something that i think about all the time. It’s something you hear all the time but i guess i needed to hear it from someone that i know and who inspires me to try. He told me that i can either use my time on this planet to make someone else money( work for a company) or i can work to make myself money. Either way it’ll take the same amount of work. Ever since then i decided to try as hard as i can to make it out there for myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Oh man this is a hard question as I’m still early on in my career. I’m a scriptwriter and filmmaker. Hmm what sets me apart from others? I guess if i had to pick it’ll be the way i put a story together. The amount of creativity that goes into it. I think that’s my biggest asset. I have the mind of a child most times so there’s no end to my imagination in those times. I’m only an adult a little bit. I’m most excited about these 4 feature films I’m writing. It’ll take some time to finish them all but once complete I’ll be very happy to start submitting them to scriptwriting contests. Etc. I don’t think I’m at a point in my career where i can give a how i got to this point in my career story but if i had to say, i had a lot of help from my friends. Just help period. As far as challenges, the biggest is funding. I realized early on that films take a lot of money to make and it’s hard to find reliable people in this field if you’re not paying them. I guess that’s anywhere though so now the plan is to raise that capital to invest in my films. And the world should know that in about 5 years time, I’ll be making some of the most fieee movies and stories they’ve ever seen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well i would take them to some Caribbean events given that I’m Haitian. And as far as places to eat. Maybe Red Roosster or Le chick in wynwood. But for the most part i would just make sure they had a relaxing time. As far as my view on people i find exciting, i like people who are just themselves. I know that’s vague but i feel like in this world there’s too many people trying to be another person. So it’s exciting when i meet people who are just genuinely them wether it’s a good or bad thing. I like to travel so i guess the world is the most interesting place to checkout. I’ve been to a few countries and it’s made me less ignorant to cultures and different ways of life. It’s made me realized there’s millions of perspectives out there so i have to be mindful of it. When i travel i like to mainly talk to locals who usually point me to my daily shenanigans. I just travel by the seat of my pants really. No clear plan besides to relax. Relax and then everything else will fall into place. Those are my thoughts on Vacation

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh man so much people deserve recognition. I wouldn’t have come close to where i am without the help of my friends along the way. They’ve helped me so much with getting to where i am now. Wether it was providing advice, pulling up on set to help me in whatever way they could, coming to spend their hard earned money at my monthly day party event. The list goes on to the endless things they did and continue to do to help me succeed. I’m truly blessed to have amazing friends. It’s like because of their support i have to work even harder cause i don’t want to let any of them down. Sometimes i think they believe in me more than me. It’s nerve wracking at times but i love their support all the same.
