We had the good fortune of connecting with Luz Seaman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luz, every day, we hear about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve created two vastly different brands, both very close to my heart. Starting with RemaINme: After grieving two pregnancy losses myself, I tried to find different avenues of coping that didn’t include shame and guilt attached to religious “cult-like” therapies. I founded this nonprofit to aid women with support and compassion after trauma associated with post-miscarriage and abortion grief. Women are likely to commit suicide, suffer from a mental disorder, or spiral into addiction. Remainme.org supports women on their quest to regain hope for their future by feeling supported and regaining a sense of self through advocacy and outreach programs. I’ve included clinical and physical therapies, social groups, and online counseling. I created this brand to help myself by also helping others possibly going through similar emotional waves. Whatbetchestalkabout: I was about 24, in the prime of my party phase, going out to every bar in Miami that included a “ladies drink free night”. I vividly remember overhearing a drunk chick talk about the club promoter she was dating. He drove a BMW but somehow still lived in a studio apartment with his mother at 32. I laughed at how culturally “Miami” the situation was. From there on out, I began jotting down possible topics from people around me, relative to my city. I now look for depth when I interview people with unique stories. I base my writing on relative topics, authentic to the struggles of adulthood, identity, and trauma. I was tired of one-dimensional shows glamorizing wealthy, white, twenty-something-year-old’s in New York transitioning into adulthood. Miami needs more transparent, Latin, female voices. I’m glad to be one of them. Website: whatbetchestalkabout.com Instagram: whatbetchestalkabout Podcast: Apple & Spotify
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Most writers are storytellers, my writing style is more of a life-teller. I speak on shadowed truths most people would rather keep hidden. Themes on trauma, identity, and adulthood in Miami. My first brand, WBTA started off as a satire blog, picking at Miami culture and corny men back in 2016. As I evolved, the dialogue has as well. I felt a duty to create a voice for Miami, filled with stories of real people who live here. No topic is uncensored, I’ve written & interviewed on rape, abortion, gender fluidity, mental illness, and heartbreak. It’s been a long journey; especially believing in yourself as a creator. I am most proud of the completion of my first book detailing generational trauma and the courage to heal toxic patterns (publishing very soon). It’s a story based on experiences I’ve encountered in my life. I won’t lie, it’s a little scary having people read about my private life but after interviewing courageous people for the last 5 years, I figure it’s my turn to be honest. In my later twenties, I’ve realized that no one really knows what they’re doing. Not your mother, your boss, or your partner, we are all just trying to survive while being decent humans. We all crave relativity and humanity, which can only be achieved by sharing honest truths about the less than perfect moments. I battle imposter syndrome and change my mind about the authenticity of my writing daily. On good days I write fluidly, on my off days I delete everything. I want people to know that everything you do passionately is an art form. From cooking to sewing to holding a paintbrush and everything in between. I passionately write.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a city girl, I won’t be taking my friend straight to the beach. We will check out neighborhoods like the Gables, the Grove, Wynwood and Brickell. I love Casa Florida and Lagniappe for drinks and wine. 1800-Lucky and Better days are always a cool music vibe with exciting Miami locals. And Flannys (Flannigans) for food, can’t forget Flannys. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m fueled by storytellers who unapologetically detail life the way it authentically is, far from perfect. I look up to creators like Michaela Coel, Lena Dunham, and Issa Rae. I luckily have the support of my closest friends who constantly push me to find my own path in healing. Who constantly push me to share my story in the hopes that it can also help others.
