We had the good fortune of connecting with Gilbert Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gilbert, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
One of my very first books I read when I was in elementary school was “The Moomin Family”; a collection of Tove Jansson stories about this family of trolls that lived in a valley and their amazing adventures. I consider that book to be a very special one setting the sparkle of fantasy in the artist I am today. By reading it, I was able to “see” that world and it characters, also learning at the same time important values such as friendship, love and many others that, being such a young kid, it really helped me understanding more the real world and the interactions wirth people around me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since kid I loved drawing things. When I grew up somehow, I thought that I wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t easy since for example if you are teached to draw – let’s say- a circle, in a certain way and you do it but differently… well then it’s not a circle, for some people. So I grew up believing I wasn’t that good. Until later, when you learn that there’s no pattern for Art, there’s no specific way to draw thing and you are free to create your own worlds… and so did I. I chose ink to express myself. MNost of my work is in black and white since I kind of prefer to imagine colors inside my atmospheres… sometimes I dare with watercolors and bring in some diversity to my art works but I just love ink.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My favorite spot is down in Miami – now I live at Coral Springs – and it is the: Coral Castle. An amazing place full of enigmatic vibes; an oasis in the middle of the popular Miami.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
