Meet Dynasty | Hip Hop Soul Artist & Creative Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dynasty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dynasty, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think that in order to move forward, some level of risk is always necessary. The only place where there is no risk is in our comfort zone. I was born and raised in Queens, NYC. After college, I took a risk and moved to Tampa, FL where I had NO friends. (I just wanted to move somewhere warm.) Well, the city embraced me and championed me so much that I went on to launch a wonderful indie career there. I worked with hip hop legends (including DJ Premier) – while I was in Tampa. Consistent shows and first major radio spin.. Tampa. I started touring internationally – from Tampa. The move proved to be a risk more than worth taking. I worked in corporate HR for years before venturing out to follow my passion full time. That was in 2015. I left to pursue music and to run my arts-based youth empowerment program. It was not without its challenges, but I learned and grew so much over the next few years. In 2018 I moved to LA, knowing one person. I was not familiar with the city at all, but I was being called to take another risk, to leave the comfort of Tampa where I had completely plateaued. It was well worth it. Within my first six months I connected with a band and I was performing frequently. I started building my acting career and a year and a half later, I signed to a commercial agency. Unfortunately, that was just weeks before COVID, which was a really hard pill to swallow. Still, knowing that I was able to accomplish that makes the risk worthwhile and reminds me that I can do great things if I am willing to take leaps of faith.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a hip hop soul artist, primarily. That means that I make music from the heart. Music that makes you feel. I always tell people that music and the arts are my passion but my purpose is truly connecting with people. Out of the two, I founded bloom in INK which is a space for us to connect via creativity and conversation. That is one of the things that I am most excited about. We all need to be heard and to feel seen, especially now. We are carrying so much. I wanted to create spaces where we can enjoy some music or other creative arts, connect and share. It’s been going great so far. I am also proud of the indie career that I have managed to build while keeping my integrity and staying true to myself. Of course there are levels that I still aspire to. But all things considered, I have toured internationally for seven years straight, I’ve made the music that I want to make, I’ve had many great successes and I am still here. Still here…. in this wild ride of an industry – that is certainly something to be proud of. It was not always easy, especially being a woman in hip hop. I overcome challenges by remembering why I do what I do – to leave a legacy as someone who contributed not only something that sounded good to the ears, but was also impactful and good for the soul. I also love the stage so much that I just can’t give it up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Actually, I am brand new to the area so I need some best friends to plan the itinerary for me! I relocated to the Miami area after LA went on lockdown due to Covid. I am just starting to get my feet wet, stepping out and learning my surroundings. I’ve made a few wonderful friends and I am so excited to see what life has in store for me here. I took another risk, in moving here, and I am already seeing results. In the past month I have performed three times including one feature! I suppose based on that, I can surely say that I would take them to NYSW Jazz Lounge to hear some live music!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who encourage and inspire me daily. These are the folk who celebrate with me when things are on fire and help keep me going when things get tough. There are too many to name, but if you’ve ever come to a show to see me, slid in my DMs with some kind words, purchased anything at all from me, hugged me after a show or told someone else to check me out…you are an integral part of my story I appreciate you forever!
