We had the good fortune of connecting with Adamary Fernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adamary, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Hialeah,FL and I am a first generation Cuban American. I am grateful for my grandmother seeking a better opportunity for my mother here in the United States when she fled Cuba. Speaking on better opportunity, I strongly believe being a first generation Cuban American has huge impact in who I am today because I was raised to constantly be resilient. I was taught that I could do literally anything I put my mind to. One trait I was taught by my grandmother was fear has no place in a place of growth. This upbringing allowed me to constantly persevere.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Calligraphy is the type of art I create or how my friends like to call it “fancy graffiti”; a lot of people tend to confuse calligraphy with cursive but trust me when I tell you it’s much more than that. Calligraphy is a type of visual art that uses words and letters. That is why if you were to search up calligraphy you will notice immediately there are so many diverse styles. My business specifically specializes in Wedding/Event Calligraphy. I create anything from welcome signs to seating chart; any detail that is needed to enhance a memorable day! While there are thousands of different calligraphers,I believe what sets me apart is that each piece I create is a reflection of who I am. There is love during the crafting process and it something that is very personal to me. I always want to make sure the pieces I create enhance a memory, since there are certain memories that should never be forgotten. To be honest, I am most proud of the creative space I have made for myself, I once was so scared to share my artistic love but once I did I felt free. Professionally, I’m nowhere near where I want to be but after a year and a half into my business, it has not been easy at all. A lot of sleepless nights, learning at the moment, mistakes after mistake but you know what, I know it’ll be all worth it in the end because that is how growth happens.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay so I am a huge foodie, so my itinerary would be filled with different food and drink spots. Sorry not sorry, that a literal dream for me! Miami has so many fun things to do it’s so hard to condense it into one week! To start this week long adventure we have to start with the most important meal of the day… BRUNCH! I would hit up some of my fave places, Boss Burger in Miami Lakes,Eating House in Coral Gables, and Trigo Cafe in Hialeah. Some fun things to check out is to take a stroll to Little Havana where the mecca of the cuban culture lies. But before leaving Little Havana, you can’t forget to stop by Azucar Ice Cream for a treat and across the street catch a glimpse of Domino Park. Just a couple of blocks down to get your cafecito fix you’ll find one of the most iconic restaurants in Miami, Versailles. Other fun things to do are, visit PAMM/Frost Museum in Downtown Miami, stroll through Wynwood to checkout all the art and South Pointe Park to catch some rays. If you’re looking for some hidden gems check out Pizza Scene in Miami Lakes (best cheese slice), The Bend (best neighborhood bar), Tacos & Tattoo (try the patacon & fried oreos) and Flannigans (try literally everything). La Cocina and Ball Chain are great for late night drinks and just simply to have a good time!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to God first and foremost for allowing me to be fruitful with this talent and the grace to persevere. To my husband, my grandmother who is no longer with us and to my family and friends who have supported me from the very beginning of my journey.
