We had the good fortune of connecting with Kassandra Timothe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kassandra, how do you think about risk?
I am someone who is not a risk taker. I do not like to gamble or invest is risky stocks (only conversative IRA’s). In personal life and career and I am the same, very conservative and non risky. But in 2020, I decided to risk it all. Every year in my planner I would write, it’s time to take risks Kassandra. Start the business. host that event, jump out on faith. And I did just that. I jumped out of the boat and started walking on water. I left my job in the midst of a pandemic to run for office in North Miami.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After completing my Political Science studies at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, FL, I landed my first temporary government gig with State Representative Janet Cruz (now Senator Janet Cruz). During my time in the Tampa and Tallahassee offices, I was afforded the opportunity to speak out against the closing of USF’s satellite campus and there my passion for policy grew. A more permanent opportunity presented itself in Senator Arthenia L. Joyner’s office, someone I admired since seeing her picture in Dr. Susan McManus’s Florida Politics textbook. I was finally working for my s-hero, a Delta, an attorney and amazing civil rights activist. From slashing funding for student grants and scholarships to watching USF lose millions of dollars, my passion was government and legislation but one thing was missing, home. As the Legislative Aide for Councilwoman Lisa Montelione in the City of Tampa, District 7, I realized the power of local government but knew this job would be more meaningful if I were home. In May 2015, I joined the City of North Miami in the Public Information Office. As PIO, I became the face and spokesperson for the City of North Miami, a role I knew would later prepare and position me for a run one day. In 2008, just days after my dad passed. I stood before the Greater North Miami Chamber and received a college scholarship and in my speech, I told a room full of elected officials and business owners, I would one day come home, and run for office. 12 years later, I’m back home, and I’m running for office. I was born and raised in North Miami. A true native, I live, work and play in the heart and pulse of the City in District 2
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend of mine was visiting Miami for the first time, my itinerary would include.. Breakfast/Brunch at R House, Lunch at Coyo Taco in Wynwood, Happy Hour at the Wharf, A Vibe at the Da Cave in North Miami, Fun in the Sun at Hollywood Beach, Dessert at Nelly’s Fried Ice Cream and Photo Opps at North Bayshore Park in North Miami.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to the first person who recognized my gift, and continues to sow into me daily., Pastor Joann Smith. After delivering my father’s eulogy at 18 yrs old, she saw me in a vision, speaking to crowds of thousands and knew I was special and would go far. I’ve known Pastor Joan for over 15 years and she has never left my side. To all elected officials I’ve worked with, Senator Janet Cruz, Former Councilwoman Lisa Montelione and Senator Arthenia Joyner, thank you for preparing me for this journey. My family. friends. office family, deaconess sisters and JJ heart beats, I couldn’t do this journey without you all. And last but not least, my late father.. Andre Timothe, whose spirit live in me. The election date falls on his death anniversary. I’m running to give that day a new meaning.
