We had the good fortune of connecting with Minnelli Lucy France The Orchid Artist and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Minnelli Lucy France, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Having a strong work ethic and maintaining solid consistency in my work; it helps to have a “keep at it” mentality.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a botanical artist specializing in orchids. Natural science, and scientific illustration is a true merger of art and science. It’s a very niche art genre that’s very old with history. Plants were drawn and painted for scientific identification, and also for medicinal and culinary reasons, way before photography. I love painting plants all day and I’m also surrounded by them in my studio, I get plants shipped to me often and I also go on fieldtrips to green places for sketches too. This field requires plenty of research, reading, staying in the loop of things, and daily application. Drawing, and painting skills sharpen with daily practice and takes many years to develop. Artists evolve throughout their lives, it never ends, but after certain milestones in your career you get to clear zones of steadiness once your skills are sharpened enough. I’m passionate about what I do, and I care deeply about plant conservation. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? I paint orchids in a scientific and realistic way that requires a lot of observation, but I also have a series of works where I paint them from intuition. I love capturing a flower’s portrait and telling it’s story, and want my clients to enjoy the elegance and boldness of the painted flower on their walls.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well pre-pandemic the answer would have been much different since I’m from South Florida and there are so many famous and beautiful places here. I would have to say that I would fill the trip with visits to botanical places.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandmother, may she rest in peace was an amazing ray of light in my life and I have her to thank for many things but mainly she was an award-winning florist who taught me all about flower design, gardening, plant care, business, marketing and plenty more. I think that perhaps my flower obsession started with her when I was very little. My family and most especially my husband have been incredibly supportive and I’m deeply grateful to them as well.
